Catcher Kyle Higashioka Named Eastern League Player of the Week

The Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, in conjunction with the Eastern League are proud to announce that catcher Kyle Higashioka has been named the league's Player of the Week for the week of June 20-26.

Higashioka earned the award following a career day against the Akron Rubberducks on Sunday afternoon. This week, Higashioka batted .467 with four home runs, 12 RBI's, and scored six runs. Against the Rubberducks Sunday, he knocked in a career-best seven runs in a game and became the first Thunder player since Eric Jagielo in April of 2015 to hit two home runs in one game. He also tied the franchise record for RBI in a game, matching Brandon Laird's total from May 16, 2010.

The 26-year old catcher is in the midst of a career-best season across the board. He's batting .332 in 51 games between the Thunder and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders this season. Higashioka has a combined 11 home runs and 50 RBI, both of which are career-high's.

With the Thunder, Higashioka is batting .301 and leads the team in home runs (6) and slugging percentage (.519). His 33 RBI ranks second on the team.

The Player of the Week honor for Higashioka is his second of the season. He was named the International League's Player of the Week for the week of June 6-12 after he batted .545 with seven extra base hits and 13 RBI's.
