Two Bad Innings Doom Scrappers

(Niles, OH) - On Sunday afternoon the Mahoning Valley Scrappers held the Batavia Muckdogs to just one hit over seven innings. Unfortunately the game was nine innings and not seven. The Muckdogs used seven hits to score seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to top the Scrappers 7-2 for their first win of the season.

The Scrappers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Gabriel Mejia walked on four pitches to start the inning. Alexis Pantoja followed with a base hit. After Pantoja stole second, both runners would come in to score on a Luke Wakamatsu RBI single for an early 2-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley starter Aaron Civale, making his professional debut, worked two scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.

In the top of the fourth inning Samuel Castro walked and Jhonny Santos singled to start the inning. With one out Aaron Knapp would reach on a fielding error to load the bases. A fielder's choice would score Castro. Pablo Garcia would then double to right field to give the Muckdogs a 3-2 lead.

Batavia would pull away in the top of the fifth inning. Michael Garzillo walked to start the inning. A sac bunt and a ground out would move him to third with two outs Santos would walk to extend the inning. JJ Gould and Knapp each followed with RBI singles. Garcia would then strike again with a two run single to push the score out to the final of 7-2.

The Muckdogs would manage just one more hit the rest of the game, a double by Garzollo in the eighth inning.

Civale worked 2.0 innings and did not allow a hit or a run. He walked one and struck out three. Ryan Colegate (0-2) would take the loss in relief. He went 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs, four earned, on four hits. Colegate walked four and struck out three. Devon Stewart, Randy Valladares and Leandro Linares would follow with 4.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Scrappers (2-8) and the Muckdogs (1-9) will conclude their series on Monday night at 7:05pm. Righty Micah Miniard (0-0) will make the start for Mahoning Valley.
