Ducks Shutout Bluefish To Take Series

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-36) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (35-28) 4-0 in the finale of a four-game weekend series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. Long Island registers their second shutout in three games against Bridgeport, and the Flock has now kept the opposition off of the scoreboard in a ballgame seven times in 2016, the most overall in the Atlantic League.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan (3-2) was tagged with the loss, lasting six innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking one, striking out six and surrendering a home run in recording his second quality start of the season. Long Island Starting Pitcher Mark Blackmar (5-2) earned the win after firing seven scoreless innings, giving up six hits and striking out seven without allowing a walk. Blackmar improves to 2-0 in three starts against the Bluefish in 2016, and has not allowed a run in 21 consecutive innings against Bridgeport, walking just one and striking out 16 batters.
Long Island struck first in the top half of the seventh inning of this pitchers' duel off Beavan when Ruben Gotay launched a solo home run down the right field line to open up the frame, his fourth big fly of the season, and in the blink of an eye Long Island took a 1-0 lead. Clinging to a one-run cushion, the Ducks looked for insurance in the top of the ninth inning, and that is exactly what they got off Bridgeport reliever R.J. Hively, scoring three runs on five hits to take a commanding 4-0 advantage. Gotay was the thorn in the side of the 'Fish once again, as he drove home Cody Puckett and Dan Johnson with an opposite-field two-run double to left after Puckett and Johnson began the rally with back to back singles. Gotay would later score the third run of the inning when he was driven in on an RBI single from Anthony Vega with two men out. That was more than enough, as Blackmar, Eury De La Rosa and Frank DeJiulio Jr. retired the final ten batters they faced combined. Long Island's pitching staff allowed just one run in their final 28 innings pitched in the series, winning three straight games. The Bluefish embark on a seven-game, two-state road trip to Lancaster and Somerset beginning tomorrow night, and return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, July 4th for an Independence Day matchup with the York Revolution which kicks off a three-game homestand and the second half of the 2016 regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 4:12 P.M. There will $4 tickets for the 4th and the second Collector's Pin will be given away as Bridgeport says Happy Birthday to America in the Park City.
