Mapes Rebounds with Gem in Senators 3-1 Win

Tyler Mapes capped off a weekend of fine starting pitching by the Harrisburg Senators by throwing a complete game gem in a 3-1 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on a sunny afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

With the win, the Senators (41-33) have reached a season-high eight games over .500 as they remain packed among three-team cluster atop the Eastern League Western Division.

Mapes made it 24 innings by Harrisburg's starting pitchers this weekend without allowing an earned run by throwing his second complete game in his last three starts. Greg Ross threw seven scoreless on Friday night, followed by Reynaldo Lopez's eight shutout frames on Saturday before Mapes' outstanding effort Sunday

Just removed from his worst start of the season in Portland on Tuesday, Mapes scattered eight hits and struck out four to earn his seventh win of the season. New Hampshire was able to score an unearned run in the ninth when the leadoff man reached on an error and later scored when Harrisburg just missed completing a game-ending double play.

With the tying run on first base, Mapes induced a groundout to second base on his 111th pitch to end the game.

Again, the Senators scored early but did not add much to the total as the day progressed. Neftali Soto doubled to start the second inning, and after back-to-back one-out walks, the bases were loaded. In his first game with the Senators this season, catcher Nick Rickles scored the first run with an RBI groundout.

Wilmer Difo singled with one out in the third inning, and then stole second base as Isaac Ballou struck out for the second out. Soto followed by hitting a double for a second consecutive inning to score Difo and put Harrisburg on top, 2-0. Soto finished 3-for-4 on the day and is hitting .368 in the month of June.

Harrisburg went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position through eight innings, but in the ninth Adrian Sanchez doubled with two outs, and Rafael Bautista followed with a double of his own to make it 3-0, Senators.

Sanchez's double was his team-high 13th of the day, as he also tripled in Sunday's game.

The Senators return home for a three-game series against the Bowie Baysox, beginning Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Lucas Giolito will face off against Bowie's Brandon Barker in the series opener.
