ICYMI: Braxton Davidson hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth, but the Pelicans came back with runs in the sixth and eighth innings while escaping with a 4-3 win against the Mudcats on Friday night in Myrtle Beach. Davidson was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the loss for the Mudcats. Sal Giardina was 2-for-4 and scored when Davidson hit his go-ahead home run (4) in the sixth.

ON TO THE NEXT ONE: The Mudcats continue a seven game road trip with game three of a four game series against the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach. Carolina finished the 2016 first half schedule at 29-41 and 14.5 games back of first half champion Salem. The Mudcats were also 7.0 games back of second place Myrtle Beach at the end of the first half. The Pelicans finished the first half at 36-34 and 7.5 games out of first. The Mudcats were 4-7 versus Myrtle Beach in the first half; including a 3-3 mark at home and a 1-4 record on the road.

STARTING OFF: Starter Caleb Beech gets the nod for game three tonight in Myrtle Beach against the Pelicans. Beech has started just one other time this season for the Mudcats and is 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA for the Mudcats this season. His Carolina League debut came in game two of a doubleheader against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on 6/18 at Five County Stadium. Beech pitched into the sixth in his first start with the Mudcats on 6/18 and allowed two runs on seven hits. He also struck out five and did not walk a batter while throwing 72 pitches (53 strikes).

HEATING UP: Sal Giardina is batting .400/.400/.600 (8-for-20) over his last five games... Tanner Murphy is 4-for-7 over his last three games and is batting .308/.438/.615 over his last five games (4-for-13, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI).

WHIFFS: Braxton Davidson (83 SO, 31.3%) and Jordan Edgerton (81 SO, 29.6%) are 3rd and 4th respectively in the league in most strikeouts. Davidson has lowered his strikeout percentage to 21.7% (15 SO) over his last 18 games and is batting .298/.420/.526 with 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR and 13 RBI over that same span. Edgerton leads the league in most strikeouts in June with 30 over 20 games (39.5%) and is batting .167/.197/.264 this month. The Mudcats, however, are 3rd in the Carolina League in fewest strikeouts as a team (502 SO, 19.4%).

WHERE THEY RANK: Matt Withrow is currently 9th in the league in earned run average (3.50) and 4th among qualified starters in average against (.226)... Chase Johnson-Mullins and Evan Phillips are tied for 2nd in the league in saves (8). Johnson-Mullins is also tied for 2nd in games (22) and tied for 4th in games finished (14). Phillips is also 2nd in games finished (16)... Braxton Davidson is 3rd in the league in most strikeouts (83)... Jordan Edgerton is 4th in most strikeouts (81) in the league... Starter Max Povse is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in strikeouts (76) and 5th in lowest BB-IBB/9ip ratio (1.82)... Ryan Clark leads the league in most losses (9), most HR allowed (12) and most R/ER runs (55/48) allowed.

LOCAL ALL-STARS: Cary's Max Povse and Evan Phillips combined to allow all four California League runs in a 6-4 Carolina League victory in the 2016 Carolina-California League All-Star game in Lake Elsinore, CA on 6/21 in Southern California... Povse pitched the fourth and allowed one run and one hit over one full inning pitched. Lancaster's Bobby Boyd started the fourth with a pop up that was lost in the night sky by Lynchburg's Greg Allen and turned into a triple... Phillips pitched the beginning of the ninth and allowed three runs and three hits over 0.1 innings before leaving the game. He left with two runners on and struck out the last batter he faced.

LINEUP BREAKDOWN: The top three batters in Carolina's lineup have combined to hit .251 (208 hits) with 87 RBI this season. The top three have also scored 113 of Carolina's 283 total runs this season. The middle three (four, five and six) hitters have combined to hit .242 (189 hits) with 86 runs and 99 RBI this season. The bottom third is batting .223 (156 hits) with 83 runs and 62 RBI.
