Cyclones Tame The Tigers, 2-1

NORWICH, CT - The Cyclones were able to salvage the finale of a three-game series in Connecticut, defeating the Tigers by the score of 2-1 on Friday night.

Merandy Gonzalez (1-0) shined in his second start of the season. The righthanded pitcher allowed one run during his 6.0 innings of work, walking two batters and striking out eight. Gonzalez threw everything he had at Tigers and in conclusion was able to walk away with his first win of the season, and the first win of the season for any Cyclones starting pitcher.

Brooklyn was making good contact at the plate during the first two innings of play, however, the team was unable to push any runs across. That all changed with two outs in the third inning. Colby Woodmansee started the threat with a line drive to center field followed by well struck fly ball from Ali Sanchez that resulted in a ground-rule double and put a pair of runs in scoring position. Jacob Zanon capitalized on the scoring chance, as he drove in a pair with a two-RBI single to left field giving the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.

The team treaded zeroes for the the next two and a half innings as the Tigers offense was tamed by Gonzalez for most of the night But in the bottom of the sixth, Connecticut was able to string together a pair of hits and chalked up a run after a wild pitch by Gonzalez. Despite a man on first and second base, Gonzalez was able to quell the Tigers attack by striking out designated hitter Tanner Donnels for the final out of the frame.

Bryce Beeler relieved Gonzalez in the seventh inning, and tossed 3.0 perfect innings of relief. The righthander struck out four and did not allow a base runner to collect his first save of the year. Through 7.0 innings of work on the young season, Beeler has yet to allow a hit and has issued just one base-on-balls while striking out seven.

Brooklyn will look to make it two in a row on Saturday night as they return home to take on the Renegades in the opening of a three-game series. LHP Joel Huertas will make the start for Brooklyn and third-round pick Blake Tiberi makes his first appearance in a Cyclones uniform. In addition to the game there will be post-game firework presentation.
