Mystic Schooners News Release

NEWPORT - The hitting continued for the Schooners at Cardines Field Friday night as they beat the Newport Gulls 10-4.

The team welcomed back 2014 Schooner Toby Handley who hit in the leadoff spot and started the game with a base hit to get things rolling. Handley would steal second and get to third on a throwing error. Later in the inning Brett Bond hit a ground ball to first base that scored Handley to make the score 1-0 at the end of one.

The Schooners tacked on their second run in the second when Scotty Bradley doubled to left center field to bring in Aaron Hill who led the inning off with a base hit.

After Newport scored their first run in the bottom of the second the Schooners answered right back with a three run third. Ryan Ramiz singled with one out and Brett Bond followed that with a walk. With two men on Chase Lunceford doubled to bring in both runners. The third run of the inning came from an RBI double by Casey Baker to bring in Lunceford. Baker nearly had a homerun off the top of the fence in right field and it brought the score to 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third.

The Gulls pulled to within two runs when Jake Brodt hammered a two run homer over the left field fence to make the score 5-3 at the end of three.

No more runs came across for either team until the eighth when the Schooners broke the game open and turned it into a blowout. Five runs came across, it was started by Aaron Hill who doubled to lead off the inning. Then Nick Mascelli brought in Hill with an RBI single. After Scotty Bradley singled Toby Handley hit a ground rule double that got lost in the left field bullpen to bring in Mascelli and advance Bradley to third. Ryan Ramiz followed that up with a two RBI double to bring in both Bradley and Handley. And the fifth and final run came in thanks to an RBI single by Brett Bond that scored Ramiz to make the score 10-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Gulls got one run back in the home half to make it 10-4. But Schooner pitching was solid throughout the game. Zach Ours got the start and got the job done turning over to the bullpen after four innings of work. Danny Marsh who picked up the win was next on the mound. Ryan Connolly and Jason Foley, who the Schooners also welcomed back from last years squad, closed out the ballgame.

The win was the Schooners third in a row and they are now above .500 at 7-6 on the season. With help from around the league the Schooners move into sole possession of second place in the Southern Division standings.

The Schooners will be back in action Saturday at 2:00pm at Washington Park in Groton for a home game against the New Bedford BaySox.
