 Quad Cities River Bandits

Hermelyn's Homer Not Enough in Loss to Wisconsin

June 24, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

GRAND CHUTE, Wisc. - The Quad Cities River Bandits took an early lead thanks to a two-run home run by Anthony Hermelyn, but it was all Wisconsin Timber Rattlers the rest of the way in a 7-2 loss Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium. Yoanys Quiala pitched three strong innings of relief, but it was too little, too late after a four-run fifth inning broke the game open for Wisconsin. Myles Straw extended his hitting streak to four games with a leadoff single in the first.

After Hermelyn's second home run of the year gave the River Bandits (0-2, 31-40) a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Timber Rattlers (2-0, 36-36) used solo home runs from Jake Gatewood in the second and Isan Diaz in the fourth to tie the game. Then three ground ball hits and a pair of walks helped the Rattlers break the game open with a four-run fifth inning. All the runs were charged to Bandits starter Chris Murphy (3-5) who allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Bandits loaded the bases with the game still tied in the top of the fifth, but couldn't push a run across, which would bite them in the home half of the inning. Freddy Peralta was in for his first frame of relief when he walked Kristian Trompiz and hit Kyle Tucker with a pitch to pack the bags with two outs, but got a groundout from Dexture McCall to end the inning. Peralta (4-1) gave up two hits and two walks over four scoreless innings of relief.

Tucker would pick up a single in the eighth inning, his first since returning from the disabled list on Thursday. He promptly stole two bases to regain the Midwest League lead in steals with 25 on the year. Bobby Wernes had a two-out single in the ninth to keep the game alive, but the Bandits couldn't rally any further.

Hermelyn's home run was his second of the year, surpassing his total from 2015 in his first professional season with Tri-City. It was also the tenth homer hit by a Bandit in the month of June, which is the most long balls hit in a single month this season by the River Bandits.

Quad Cities and Wisconsin have now each won four games in the season series and the Timber Rattlers have taken the first two of the four-game weekend set. The teams meet six more times on the year, starting Saturday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Matt Bower (2-0) gets the start in his return to Quad Cities against Marcos Diplan (5-1) for the Timber Rattlers. You can hear the action with Jake Levy starting with the LLOYD Agencies Pregame Show at 6:20 p.m. on 1170 AM K-BOB, riverbandits.com and the TuneIn app.
