'Dogs Can't Fight off Reading, Fall 11-3

Portland, Maine - The Reading Fightin Phils (52-22) used three big innings, and took the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (26-46), 11-3, Friday night at Hadlock Field. Portland drops to 1-3 on the homestand, Reading's .703 winning percentage is the best in all of Minor and Major League Baseball.

The Sea Dogs tied a season-high with 15 hits, receiving a multi-hit game from six of nine starters. Yoan Moncada finished 2-for-5, blasting his first Double-A homer in the fourth. Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-5 with a double.

Portland took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning on a sacrifice fly in the second by Rainel Rosario, but Reading took the lead for good in the third, receiving a 3-run homer by Rhys Hoskins (#20). Mitch Atkins took the loss for the 'Dogs, giving up 10 hits and seven runs over 3.2 IP.

Reading added to their lead in the fourth, scoring four times off Atkins. Andrew Pullin (3-for-4), and Dylan Cozens delivered RBI singles; Jake Fox added a two-run double. Portland scored in the fourth on Moncada's homer and a two-out RBI single by Nate Freiman (2-for-5).

Jeremy Bleich (3-1) worked two scoreless in relief of Nick Pivetta (4 IP, 10 H, 3 R) to earn the win for Reading.

The Fightins scored three in the seventh on a two-run single from Jesmuel Valentin and a run-scoring single form Pullin. The final run for the Phils came on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Benintendi, Freiman, Tzu-Wei Lin (3-for-5), Moncada Tim Roberson (2-for-4) and Jake Romanski (3-for-5) combined for the 15 Portland hits. The Portland pitching staff had 16 strikeouts on the night and 29 in the last 2 games.

The Sea Dogs and Reading Fightin Phils continue their three-game series on Saturday night beginning at 6:00 PM. Teddy Stankiewicz (2-6, 4.58) makes the start for Portland against Ricardo Pinto (2-3, 4.273) for Reading. Tickets are available by calling 207-879-9500 or at seadogs.com.
