Third Inning Rally Leads to Victory

Jackson Generals News Release

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals rallied for five runs on four hits in the third inning of an 8-2 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts on Friday night at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, Tennessee. With the win, the Generals have won six of seven and are once again 22 games above .500 overall at 47-25, tied for the highest they've been above .500 in 2016.

With one out in the third, Brock Hebert got the rally going for Jackson (1-1, 47-25). Hebert singled up the middle before a pitch hit Ian Miller and Benji Gonzalez singled to load the bases. Tyler O'Neill drove in the first run of the third when he singled in Hebert. A batter later with the bases loaded, Leon Landry clubbed his fourth triple of the season to clear the bases and give the Generals a 5-1 lead. D.J. Peterson brought in the final run on a sacrifice fly to center and after two and a half Jackson led 6-1.

However, the Generals first got on the board in the very first inning. Miller walked to start the game and promptly stole second. During his stolen base, shortstop Engelb Vielma bobbled the throw from catcher Mitch Garver and it trickled into center, allowing Miller to advance to third. Gonzalez singled in Miller with a base hit to left and just two batters into the game, the Generals led 1-0.

Chattanooga (1-1, 37-35) responded quickly with a run in the bottom of the first. With one out Vielma walked and quickly stole second. A couple batters later Garver singled in Vielma to tie the game up at 1-1 after one.

Two innings later, the Generals broke the game open. The five-run third was Jackson's eighth five-run inning this season. The season-high for most runs in an inning however is seven, which the Generals accomplished in the second inning of a 9-8 win over the Tennessee Smokies on June 18th.

For the first time in 11 games, O'Neill hit a homer. In the fifth inning the 21-year-old unloaded for a two-run blast to left center, his 13th of the season, to give the Generals an 8-1 lead. With the homer and RBI single, the O'Neill has 59 RBI this season, the most in the Southern League.

O'Neill ended up going 2-for-5 with a homer, three RBI, two runs, and a single. With the two hits, O'Neill extended his hit streak dating back to June 13th to 10 games. Over those 10 games, O'Neill is hitting .343 (12-for-35) with a homer, six RBI, four runs scored, three doubles, and four walks. It's O'Neill's third 10+ game hit streak this season: 10 games from April 7th to April 18th and a season-high 14 games from April 23rd to May 10th.

Chattanooga's final run of the game came in the fifth when Daniel Palka hit a solo homer to right, his Southern League leading 17th of the season. Palka's 17 leads the league while O'Neill's 13 is the second most in the circuit.

Andrew Moore (3-0, 3.18) picked up the win over five solid innings of work. The righty worked out of two jams forcing the Lookouts to strand two in the first and the bases loaded in the fourth. Moore gave up just two runs, both earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out a pair. The two walks given up by Moore are tied for the most in six Double-A starts for the 22-year-old.

Ryan Eades (4-3, 4.36) took the loss and continues to struggle against the Generals. The righty earned his third loss overall and second in two starts against the Generals. Eades gave up eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits over five frames. In his only other start against Jackson on April 16th also in Chattanooga, Eades gave up eight runs, all earned, on 11 hits over three and two thirds. Over 12 total starts and 64 innings pitched Eades has given up 33 runs, 31 of which are earned. That means in just eight and a third of those 64 innings, Eades has given up 16 of those 33 runs (15 of 31 ER) all against the Generals.

A night after going 2-for-17 with men in scoring position and stranding 10 men on base, the Generals began to turn things around with men on. Jackson went 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position Friday while stranding just six. Meanwhile the Lookouts are now 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and have stranded 18 runners on base in this series.

Jackson looks to make it two in a row against Chattanooga on Saturday in game three of the five-game series at AT&T Field in Chattanooga. Sam Gaviglio (4-3, 3.86) is slated to start for the Generals while the Lookouts will send Stephen Gonsalves (0-0, 0.00) to the hill to make his Double-A debut.
