West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
MIDLAND, MI -The West Michigan Whitecaps used a late rally to win their seventh straight game in a 5-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Tuesday night at Dow Diamond.
Will Allen got the Whitecaps on the board in the first inning with an RBI-double to right-center field to put West Michigan up 1-0. The score would stay the same until the seventh, when Great Lakes took a 2-1 lead on a run-scoring double by Brendon Davis and a Garrett Hope sacrifice fly. In games the 'Caps have been trailing after seven innings, the team entered Tuesday's contest with a 1-15 record. They would add a win to that record when Allen grinded out an 11-pitch at-bat resulting with a two-run single to right, giving the 'Caps a 3-2 lead. Sacrifice flies from Rashad Brown and David Gonzalez gave West Michigan a pair of insurance runs with a 5-2 lead to end the scoring in the ballgame.
Jordan Smith pitched one of his best games as a Whitecap, but received a no-decision despite six innings allowing just two runs. Jon Maciel (4-2) tossed two scoreless innings in relief to earn his fourth win of the year. Loons pitcher Garrett Harrison (2-3) took his third loss after allowing a pair of runs in one inning. The 'Caps record is now 10 games over .500 at 29-19, and now hold a seven-game winning streak for the first time since July 11-18, 2014. The team also finishes a spectacular month of May with a record of 18-9 -- the second-best May winning percentage in team history (.667). Great Lakes record falls to 22-28. Will Allen led the 'Caps with two hits including a double and three RBI in the contest.
