Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
JUPITER, FL - Maybe the Memorial Day off wasn't so great for the Charlotte Stone Crabs.
Coming off a dominant sweep of division rival Fort Myers, Charlotte traveled across the Sunshine State and took a 5-0 shutout loss to another FSL South foe, the Jupiter Hammerheads, on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
The loss was the sixth shutout of the season against the Stone Crabs, who fell to 26-27 on the year. Thanks to Bradenton's loss at home against Palm Beach, Charlotte remains three games out of first in the division.
Hammerheads starter Jeff Brigham (1-4) was masterful, busting out of a recent funk to two-hit the Crabs through five terrific innings. Charlotte's lone threat was in the fifth, when Justin Williams and Mac James hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning.
But Brigham forced a flyout from Nick Ciuffo, struck out Bralin Jackson, and, after a walk to Alec Sole, fanned Thomas Milone with the bases loaded to escape the jam. Esmerling De La Rosa and Jose Adames finished off the game with four shutout innings, allowing just a double to Williams and ninth-inning singles to James and Ciuffo.
Making his Stone Crabs debut, 21 year-old Henry Centeno (0-1) threw two perfect innings before running into trouble in the third. Catcher's interference put Brad Haynal on to lead off the inning, and Chris Hoo followed with a ground-rule double over the left-center field fence. Brian Schales broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single, and Junior Sosa's sac fly scored Hoo to make it 2-0 Hammerheads.
Jupiter jumped on the weakened Centeno in the fourth. A four-pitch walk to Taylor Ard opened the frame, and John Norwood followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Dexter Kjerstad and Haynal ripped back-to-back singles to make it 4-0. An RBI single from Avery Romero in the sixth extended the lead to 5-0.
The series continues on Wednesday night from Roger Dean Stadium, as Stone Crabs RHP Benton Moss (2-5, 4.81) battles Hammerheads ace RHP Luis Castillo (5-2, 2.13). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. You can listen to it live on the Stone Crabs Radio Network on stonecrabsbaseball.com or the TuneIn Radio App on your smartphone or tablet.
