Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON, OH - Carl Wise lined a go-ahead two-run double in the ninth inning, making sure a gem from Sean Reid-Foley would not go to waste, and the Lansing Lugnuts (26-24) rallied to top the Dayton Dragons, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Reid-Foley (Win, 3-3), considered the Lugnuts' top prospect by both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, struck out ten Dayton Dragons in a career high eight innings, the first Lugs starter to pitch past the seventh in 2016. In the process, Reid-Foley set the side down in order in seven of those eight innings.
The fifth inning was the exception: James Vasquez led off with a single, Brantley Bell singled two batters later, and Reydel Medina tripled both teammates in and scored on a wild pitch to leapfrog the Dragons from a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. They were the only Dragons base runners of the game.
Dayton's lead lasted until the ninth. Jeremy Kivel (Loss, 1-2) walked Connor Panas and gave up a single to Lane Thomas. Wise greeted new reliever Sandy Lugo (Blown Save, 1) with a two-strike hooking line drive down the left field line, plating both Panas and Thomas.
Dusty Isaacs (Save, 10) pitched the bottom of the ninth in perfect fashion, striking out two.
The ninth-inning blow was the capper to another strong game for Wise, who opened the scoring with a home run off the left-field foul pole in the third inning. It was his second straight game with a roundtripper.
Juan Kelly added an RBI triple for the Lugnuts, and both Panas and Thomas went 1-for-2 with two walks.
Dayton manager Dick Schofield and center fielder Shane Mardirosian were each ejected following a checked-swing/strike-three call from home-plate umpire Vince Jackson in the fifth inning.
The Lugs and Dragons play the second game of their three-game series at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Left-hander Tayler Saucedo (1-5, 5.08) starts against Dayton right-hander Austin Orewiler (1-2, 2.42).
The next Lugnuts home game is on Friday, June 3rd, a LAFCU Fireworks night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The weekend continues with Star Wars Night on Saturday, June 4th, also featuring postgame LAFCU Fireworks.
