Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - After battling for almost three and a half hours in a Memorial Day matinee, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Fresno Grizzlies had to settle for a 6-6 tie in their series finale on Monday afternoon at Chukchanski Park.

Due to a 3:30 p.m. MDT curfew, the game was called after the teams were tied at six after 10 innings. The tie is only the second in Sky Sox history. The only other tie occurred on August 29, 1996 in a 9-9 stalemate with the Calgary Cannons at Security Service Field.

Jorge Lopez (1-3, 6.20) started the game for the Sky Sox and got into early trouble, allowing three runs in the second inning as Fresno gained the early advantage.

Fresno starter Cesar Valdez (1-0, 3.60) held the lead for a few innings for the Grizzlies, but he couldn't hold it for the whole game.

The Sky Sox got on the board in the fifth when Garin Cecchini hit a single to left to score Yadiel Rivera with the first run for the Sky Sox. A few batters later, Michael Reed stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Reed gave the Sky Sox the lead with one swing, crushing a grand slam to left field, his second home run of the season, to give the Sky Sox a 5-3 lead.

The grand slam marks the first time in team history the Sky Sox have hit three grand slams in a road series after Will Middlebrooks and Andy Wilkins each hit grand slams in Friday's Sky Sox victory. It is also the first time the Sky Sox have ever hit three grand slams on a road trip in franchise history.

Lopez was pulled from the game with runners on base with two outs in the fifth. He finished his start with six strikeouts and three earned runs against on six hits in four and two thirds innings pitched. Michael Kirkman relieved him and pitched a scoreless inning and a third to keep the Sky Sox ahead.

In the seventh, Fresno rallied for a pair of runs to tie the game of Sky Sox reliever Drew Gagnon.

The Sky Sox retook the lead in the eighth on Yadiel Rivera's run scoring single that scored Eric Young Jr. with the go-ahead run.

Fresno tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a home run from Eury Perez off reliever Jaye Chapman. That proved to be the last run of the ballgame.

Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth, then Jacob Barnes left the winning run on third base in a scoreless 10th inning before the game was called.

The tie gives the Sky Sox a series win in Fresno after taking two out of three games.

The Sky Sox begin a four game home series against the Omaha Storm Chasers tomorrow night at Security Service Field. Hiram Burgos (2-4, 4.03) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. MDT.
