Whitecaps Blind Dragons to Complete Sweep
May 30, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI -The West Michigan Whitecaps used the power of the sun to post a 7-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons and complete a four-game sweep Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Dayton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings, but the 'Caps rallied with two runs in the third and fourth. The third inning rally featured an RBI-single by Will Maddox while the fourth was highlighted by a pair of sun-aided run-scoring base hits by Derek Hill and David Gonzalez to give West Michigan a 4-2 lead. Gonzalez's fly ball was lofted high into the air, and lost by the Dragons in the sunny skies to fall behind second baseman Shed Long in shallow right-center field. The play resulted in the 'Caps scoring for the fourth time, and ultimately the game-winning run. The Whitecaps would plate two more in the fifth on Rashad Brown's two-run single to extend their advantage to 6-2. In the eighth, the 'Caps concluded the scoring with Will Allen's RBI-double to push the lead to 7-3 and end the scoring in the game.
Sandy Baez (2-5) was bounced back from struggles in his first two innings to toss five innings allowing two runs to record his second win of the season. Dragons starter Ty Boyles (0-3) took his fifth loss after allowing six runs in four innings. The 'Caps record improves to a season-best 28-19, and now hold a six-game winning streak for the first time since July of 2014. The team also holds a spectacular record of 17-7 in the month of May. Dayton's record falls to 13-38. Will Maddox led the 'Caps by going 4-for-5 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in the contest.
