Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - West Michigan's Will Maddux collected four hits to lead the Whitecaps to a 7-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Monday afternoon. The win gave the Whitecaps a sweep of the four-game series.
The Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings, but West Michigan responded with two runs in each of the next three innings to take a 6-2 lead. Both teams tallied one run in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Dragons nine-hit attack was led by Reydel Medina, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances with a single, double, walk, and hit batsman. Brantley Bell had two hits including a triple and an RBI. Shed Long also had two hits.
Dragons starting pitcher Ty Boyles was charged with the loss. He worked four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with three walks and one strikeout. Boyles pitched better than his numbers would indicate but suffered from poor defensive support behind him. Reliever Bernardo Moreta replaced Boyles and allowed five hits and one run over three and two-thirds innings.
The Dragons took the lead in the first when Shane Mardirosian walked to start the game, and Kevin Garcia followed with a single to center field. Long singled to center to load the bases with no one out, and Mardirosian scored when James Vasquez grounded into a double play. In the second, Medina doubled and scored after an infield single by Bell and a throwing error on the same play to make it 2-0.
Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, Medina was hit by a pitch with one out and Bell tripled to right-center to bring him in to make it 6-3. Luis Gonzalez walked to bring the tying run to the plate, but Mitch Trees grounded into an inning-ending double play, one of four double plays the Dragons hit into in the game.
The Dragons (13-38) return home to Fifth Third Field in Dayton to open a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (24-24) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Tanner Rainey (1-5, 6.27) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Sean Reid-Foley (2-3, 3.65).
All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
