Somerset Patriots News Release
York, PA - The Somerset Patriots (21-16) only mustered three hits through eight innings, but strung together three hits in the ninth inning to get the go ahead run at home plate. The rally wasn't enough as the York Revolution (22-15) won by a final score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon from PeoplesBank Park. The Revolution have won two of the first three games of the four game series.
"We couldn't get much going early on, but it still shows you we have this never give up attitude as we were one big knock away at the end," Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie remarked.
The Revolution scored the first five runs of the game. In the third inning, Telvin Nash recorded an RBI sacrifice fly and Joel Guzman ripped an RBI double. It was Guzman's seventh RBI of the series.
York added another in the fourth via a Keith Castillo solo home run (2) and another in the fifth on an RBI single by Charley Thurber who was making his York debut.
Their final run came in the seventh as Josh Wilson crossed home on a Connor Little wild pitch to the backstop.
In the top of the eighth Carlos Guzman would hit a leadoff double and came around to score two batters later on an RBI groundout by Darwin Perez to make the score 5-1.
Somerset showed grit in the ninth inning. Aharon Eggleston led off with a walk then Bryan LaHair served a single. After a Brad Snyder strikeout, Matt Fields clubbed his team leading 21st RBI with a single cutting the deficit to 5-2. York Manager Mark Mason then summoned closer Mike DeMark from the bullpen for the save. DeMark, the former Patriot in 2014, surrendered a leadoff single to Rob Kral to load the bases, but would induce a pop up from Carlos Guzman and a ground out from Trayvon Robinson to end the threat and seal the victory.
Jorge Martinez (3-2) earned the win. He retired the first seven batters of the game and only yielded two hits in 6.2 scoreless innings. Scott McGregor (2-4) suffered the loss giving up five runs in 6.1 innings of work. DeMark converted his 12th straight save opportunity.
"I'd like our starters to get off to better starts, but I am proud how they are going deep into games, settling down and keeping our bullpen fresh," said Jodie.
The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark on Friday, June 3rd for a 7:05 p.m. game against Bridgeport Bluefish.
