West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI -The West Michigan Whitecaps won their fifth straight game in a 3-2 defeat of the Dayton Dragons 3-2 Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps tallied single runs in the first and second innings highlighted by a run-scoring double from centerfielder Derek Hill to take a 2-0 lead. Dayton found their way to the scoreboard in the third on a solo home run by catcher Jose Duarte, who was assigned to the teams' roster from extended spring training before the ballgame. Arvicent Perez' sacrifice fly in the sixth added an insurance run as the Dragons scored one in the eighth on an RBI-double by Shed Long to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of the Whitecaps. Jake Shull was summoned from the 'Caps bullpen and retired the last four Dragons hitters to record his seventh save, tying Gerson Moreno for the team lead.
Kyle Dowdy (2-0) was excellent in tossing seven innings allowing just a run while striking out to record his second win of the season. Dragons starter Jose Lopez (3-5) took the loss, his fifth of the season. The 'Caps record improves to a season-best 27-19, and now hold a season-long five game winning streak, along with 16-7 record in May. Dayton's record falls to 13-37. Perez led the 'Caps with two hits including a triple in the contest.
