Strikeouts Galore as SeaWolves Stymie Squirrels

The SeaWolves used another strong pitching performance as they took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.

Richmond jumped ahead in the first inning against Erie starter Tommy Collier. Myles Schroder and Christian Arroyo led the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, Ricky Oropesa singled home Schroder for a 1-0 lead. Hunter Cole followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Arroyo for a 2-0 advantage.

The SeaWoles struck right back in the last of the first against Richmond starter Kyle Crick. Harold Castro led off with a single and Jeff McVaney reached on a hit-by-pitch. With one out, Dean Green grounded to first and on a botched double play attempt, Oropesa threw the ball into the outfield, scoring Castro making it a 2-1 game. Corey Jones followed with an RBI single, scoring McVaney, tying the game at 2-2. The knock for Jones extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games.

Erie would take the lead in the home half of the fifth. With two outs, McVaney kept the inning alive with a double. JaCoby Jones followed with a mammoth home run over the wall in left-center, giving Erie a 4-2 lead. The home run for Jones was his fourth.

The SeaWolves would go ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when, with two outs, Drew Longley homered to left, his first of the season.

Collier (4-3) earned the win for Erie. After the two run first, he would go on to throw five scoreless frames. He finished the day allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Joe Jimenez earned his first save in his Double-A debut when he struck out the side in the ninth.

The five Erie pitchers used on Sunday, Collier, Paul Voelker, Kurt Spomer, Joe Mantiply and Jimenez combined to strike out 13 hitters.

The SeaWolves now look for a series win on Monday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. against the Squirrels. LHP Anthony Fernandez (0-0, 3.60 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Adalberto Mejia (1-1, 2.23 ERA).
