SeaWolves Shake Squirrels in Sunday Snoozer

Erie, PA -The Erie SeaWolves (20-29) downed the Flying Squirrels (16-33) by a final of 5-2 on a lethargic Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Erie's JaCoby Jones gave the SeaWolves the lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning off Squirrels starter Kyle Crick. Crick (1-3) took the loss while working 5 2/3 innings in the contest. Richmond's Ali Castillo racked up three hits and Christian Arroyo added a single and a double in the defeat. The Squirrels eight-game road trip concludes on Monday at 1:35 PM in Erie, PA. Richmond will return to The Diamond on Tuesday, May 31st with a Silver Squirrels Night. Please note the Flying Squirrels office will be closed through Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Both starting pitchers stumbled out of the gates with a pair of runs allowed in the first inning. Myles Schroder and Christian Arroyo opened the game with consecutive base hits off of RHP Tommy Collier. Ricky Oropesa delivered thefirst run of the game with a base hit to right and Hunter Cole made it a 2-0 affair via a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Collier threw 30 pitches in the lengthy first inning.

Erie responded with a pair of runs off Kyle Crick in the bottom of the first inning, tying the game 2-2. Harold Castro singled to open the inning and Jeff McVaney pushed him to second after he hit by a pitch. JaCoby Jones popped out and Dean Green hit a ground ball to first base. Ricky Oropesa fielded and stepped on the bag to secure an out but threw errantly down to second base to try and create a double play. The error allowed Casto to score and Corey Jones followed with an RBI singled to tie the game, 2-2.

Collier and Crick then settled into a rhythm and kept the game tied up until the fifth inning. Collier was able to induce double plays to end the fourth and fifthinnings to prevent Richmond from taking the lead. The Squirrels also stepped up defensively as catcher Jeff Arnold threw out his first of two runners on the day in the first inning and tagged out a runner trying to score from first base on a double to end the fourth.Erie snapped the tie against Crick in the fifth. Jeff McVaney drilled a two-out double and JaCoby Jones followed with his fourth home run of the year to take a 4-2 lead. Crick managed to recover and came back out for his final inning in the sixth inning. Erie added a run in the sixth as Drew Longley sailed a home run to left field for a 5-2 edge. The homer came with two outs and endedthe outing for Crick. The righty allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. He hit three batters and walked none in the outing. Christian Jones replaced Crick with an 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Collier worked through six full innings to earn the win for Erie. Collier (4-3) scattered seven hits and struck out six in the win. Paul Voelker, Kurt Spomer, Joe Mantiply and Joe Jimmenez kept Richmond of the board in relief of Collier. Jimmenez struck out the side to earn the save in his Double-A debut.

The Flying Squirrels eight game road trip concludes on Monday in Erie, PA at 1:35 PM. Left-hander Adalberto Mejia is scheduled to start against Erie LHP Anthony Fernandez. The Squirrels will return to The Diamond on Tuesday, May 31st with aSilver Squirrels Night. The full promotional schedule can be found here.
