Giants Continue Home-And-Home Series With Modesto The San Jose Giants play the third game of a four-game home-and-home series with the Modesto Nuts this afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The teams split the first two games of the series in Modesto with the Giants earning a 2-1 victory on Friday before the Nuts bounced back with an 8-0 shutout yesterday.
Home Cooking Today marks the beginning of a season-high 11-game homestand for the Giants. Following the two games versus the Nuts, San Jose hosts a make-up doubleheader against Lancaster on Tuesday before a three-game set versus Visalia and a four-game series against Bakersfield. Today begins a stretch for the Giants playing 18 out of 22 games at home leading into the All-Star break. San Jose's 16 home games to date this season are the fewest in the California League (10-6 record).
Road Trip Review The Giants concluded their season-high 14-game road trip last night. San Jose posted an 8-6 record on the trip. San Jose began the road swing with two losses in Modesto before sweeping a three-game series in Stockton and then taking three out of four against South Division leading Rancho Cucamonga. The Giants then picked-up one victory in three games against North Division leading Visalia before splitting two games back in Modesto. The 14-game trip is the longest road trip for any team in the California League this season. San Jose is 15-6 in their last 21 road games overall. Last night also concluded a stretch for the Giants playing 24 out of 29 games on the road dating back to April 29 (18-11 record).
Giant May San Jose's 18-9 mark in May is the best record in the California League this month. The Giants have posted the best record in the league this month so far despite playing only five out of 27 games at home.
Hinojosa, Shaw Among League Leaders The Giants boast two out of the top six hitters in the California League in shortstop C.J Hinojosa (2nd, .348) and first baseman Chris Shaw (6th, .316). Hinojosa also leads the league in on-base percentage (.434), is fourth in hits (56) and tied for fifth in runs scored (35). Shaw ranks first in RBI's (38), tied for first in doubles (17), first in slugging (.600) and tied for fourth in home runs (10).
Bullpen Standouts Closer Rodolfo Martinez picked-up his league-leading 13th save of the year in Friday's win at Modesto while lowering his season ERA to 0.89. Reyes Moronta also threw a scoreless inning on Friday and has not allowed a run in his last 11 appearances (11 innings) - the longest scoreless stretch by a Giants reliever this season. The San Jose bullpen has posted a sparkling 3.24 ERA in May after a 5.23 ERA in April. The Giants are 27-1 when leading after seven innings.
First Half Race The Giants (28-19) enter today's contest two games behind Visalia (31-18) for first place in the first half North Division race. San Jose has 23 games remaining in the first half. 19 of the Giants' final 23 games of the half are at home. San Jose has three games remaining against Visalia this half (June 1-3 at Municipal Stadium). The Giants last won a first half title during the 2013 season.
With The Bats The Giants have scored a total of just four runs over their last four games (1-3 record). San Jose is averaging 4.9 runs per game this season - sixth in the California League. The Giants are also fifth in team batting average (.262), fourth in home runs (35) and third in stolen bases (42).
Opponent Notes: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are fourth in the North Division with a 20-29 record. Modesto has lost eight out of their last 12 games. The Nuts rank eighth in the league in batting average (.241), eighth in runs scored (4.1 per game) and fourth in ERA (3.79). Modesto is a league-worst 6-16 on the road this season. The Nuts have posted a 6-4 record against San Jose this year (3-3 at Municipal Stadium).
