Washington Kastles News Release

The Kastles have concluded a strong first week of play at the French Open. Martina Hingis, Leander Paes, Bob and Mike Bryan, and Madison Brengle are all through to the third round in the doubles draw. In addition, Martina and Leander as a team and Bob Bryan playing with Coco Vandeweghe are also into the second round of mixed doubles in action today at Roland Garros. It promises to be a big Kastles Memorial Day Weekend at the French so follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest up to the minute schedules, match results, and inside scoop.

Madison Brengle, looking for her first break through on the clay courts, started the week off with an upset as she and her partner Tatjana Maria took down the No. 13 seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Para Santonja in the first round 6-2, 6-3. Brengle and Maria continued rolling in the second round as they took down French favorite Alize Cornet and her partner Magda Linette. Maria was looking for revenge after a controversial finish to her singles match with Cornet the day before. Brengle and Maria recovered after losing the second set 2-6, breaking Cornet and Linette three times in the final set to close out the match 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. The win sends Madison into the third round for the first time ever at a major in the doubles draw (Madison made the fourth round in singles at the 2015 Australian Open). Brengle and Maria play the winner of Chan/Chan and Rae/Smith in their third round match on Sunday.

Martina Hingis and partner Sania Mirza continued their quest for a "Santina Slam" in dominant fashion, not dropping a set as they cruised into the third round. Hingis and Mirza dominated the Japanese team of Nao Hibino and Eri Hozumi 6-2, 6-0 in the second round. Hingis and Mirza previously beat Daria Kasatkina (Philadelphia Freedoms) and Alexandra Panova in the first round, winning a first set tiebreak before ultimately winning the match 7-6, 6-2. The duo will play the unseeded team of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the third round. The Russian team upset the No. 16 team of Chia-Jung Chuang and Su-Wei Hsieh in the first round.

The Bryan brothers have also dominated their competition thus far, not dropping a set en route to the third round. The brothers breezed by Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez in the first round 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, the Bryans faced fellow World TeamTennis players Oliver Marach (New York Empire) and Fabrice Martin (Philadelphia Freedoms). The most prolific doubles team of all time dominated the second set tiebreak, winning seven of eight points to win 6-3, 7-6 (1). Bob and Mike could face doubles veterans Radek Stepanek and partner Nenad Zimonjic if they move past Spainards David Marrero and Pablo Carreno Busta tomorrow. The last time the Bryan Brothers faced Stepanek in a slam in men's doubles was at the 2012 US Open when Stepanek and partner, Kastles captain Leander Paes, stunned the Bryans in the semifinals 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 which stopped the Bryans quest for the doubles Grand Slam that year.

Leander Paes is starting to return to form at Roland Garros after a quiet few months on tour. Paes and his partner Marcin Matkowski punched their ticket to the third round with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 win over Julian Knowle and Florian Mayer. Paes and Matkowski had to grind out their first round match, using two tiebreakers to win 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) over Aliaksandr Bury and Denis Istomin. Paes and Matkowski could possibly face a real test in the third round in No. 2 doubles team in the world Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares if they defeat David Guez and Vincent Millot.

The Kastles also experienced continued success in mixed doubles. The legendary duo of Paes and Hingis, searching for their first French Open title as a pair, won their opening round match with ease 6-4, 6-4 over Anna-Lenda Groenefeld and Robert Farah. They will face Yaroslava Shvedova and Florin Mergea, the four seeds, in the second round. Their match is scheduled as the third match on Court 6 today. Bob Bryan, teaming with Coco Vandeweghe also won their first round match over the French duo of Virginie Razzano and Vincent Millot 6-3, 7-5. They are set to face Chia-Jung Chuang and Henri Kontinen today. They are the fourth match on Court 17.

Shelby Rogers of the San Diego Aviators is also among the WTT players making a splash at the French Open, as she upset two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova 6-0, 6-7, 6-0 to reach her first fourth round at a slam. Rogers, who was a Kastles sub during the 2014 season, comes to DC with the Aviators to take on the Kastles on August 10th.
