Stockton Ports News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - After scoring 11 runs on 15 hits in a blowout loss on Thursday night, the Stockton Ports played a much different type of ballgame on Friday night but still came out on the losing end. Stockton mustered only three hits, none of which came after the third inning as Lake Elsinore Storm starter T.J. Weir (3-2) struck out a career-high 12 as the Storm defeated the Ports by a final of 3-0 at The Diamond, marking the third time the Ports have been shut out in a week.

Lake Elsinore got on the board in the bottom of the first as Josh VanMeter singled to right and scored two batters later on an RBI single to right-center to make it a 1-0 Storm lead. The Storm took advantage of a Ports error in the third as VanMeter hit a fly ball to right-center with one out that was dropped by James Harris. With VanMeter at third, Ports starter Heath Fillmyer (3-4) uncorked a wild pitch that allowed VanMeter to score and make it 2-0.

The Storm plated their final run in the sixth. With two on and two out, Marcus Greene, Jr. singled to center to plate Edwin Moreno and run the Lake Elsinore lead to 3-0. The hit also knocked Fillmyer from the contest. The right-hander pitched well but suffered the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while matching a career-high with eight strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Stockton could got get anything starter versus Weir. Weir allowed back-to-back singles to open the second but the rally quickly stalled on a double-play hit into by Sandber Pimentel. Stockton's last hit of the game was a leadoff double by Argenis Raga in the third, but the Ports stranded the runner at second.

Weir would go on to pitch seven dominant innings while walking one and striking out a career-best 12. Brad Wieck pitched a scoreless eighth and Yimmi Brasoban (SV, 5) notched his fifth save of the season by striking out the side in order in the ninth.

Cody Stull pitched the final two-and-a-third innings scoreless for Stockton and allowed three hits while striking out three.

The Ports and Storm play the second game of their four-game set on Saturday night at The Diamond. Casey Meisner (0-7, 4.14 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lake Elsinore right-hander Brett Kennedy (0-2, 3.29 ERA). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
