Giants' Pitching Shines in 2-1 Victory over Nuts

MODESTO, CA - Mark Reyes took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Giants bullpen closed it out late in a 2-1 win over the Modesto Nuts on Friday evening at John Thurman Field. The victory guaranteed a winning record for San Jose on their season-high 14-game road trip. The Giants are 8-5 on the trip with one game remaining.
Reyes (3-1), who faced the minimum 18 hitters over the first six innings, picked-up the win. The left-hander allowed just three hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings during his dominant start. Reyes walked two and struck out three. Pat Young (1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) recorded the final out of the bottom of the seventh before Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) and Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively to seal the victory. Martinez earned his league-leading 13th save of the season. The four San Jose hurlers combined on a four-hitter.
Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, SB) and had two hits and drove in a run to lead the Giants offensively. C.J Hinojosa (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits.
Reyes and Nuts starter Parker French locked up in a pitchers' duel as the game was scoreless over the first four innings. San Jose's only hit in the first four frames was a double from Hinojosa in the top of the first. The lone Modesto baserunner in the opening four innings was a leadoff single from Collin Ferguson in the bottom of the third. Reyes though induced a double play to work out of the inning.
The Giants then broke through against French in the top of the fifth. With one out, Carbonell lined a single into left to start the rally. Carbonell then stole second before taking third on a wild pitch. Ty Ross followed with a sacrifice fly to center plating Carbonell for a 1-0 lead.
Reyes issued a leadoff walk to Drew Weeks in the bottom of the fifth, but promptly picked-off the runner at first. The San Jose starter then needed just eight pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
The Giants added to their lead with a single run in the top of the seventh. Chris Shaw led off with a double to the fence in deep right center before moving to third on Jonah Arenado's fly out to center. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. then grounded out with the runner holding at third, but Carbonell followed with a line drive double into the right center field gap to bring home Shaw making the score 2-0.
Reyes returned to the mound in the bottom of the seventh, but ran into trouble as Omar Carrizales led off with a bunt single before taking second on a wild pitch. Luis Jean then lined out to third for the first out of the inning. Wes Rogers was up next and he doubled down the right field line to score Carrizales cutting the San Jose lead to 2-1. Reyes followed the hit by retiring Weeks on a groundout before Dom Nunez walked to put the go-ahead run on base. Young was then summoned from the bullpen and he needed just one pitch to retire Josh Fuentes on a deep fly out to right center.
Moronta pitched the bottom of the eighth for the Giants and worked around a leadoff single to keep the one-run lead intact. Ferguson started the frame with a base hit before Moronta came back to strikeout the next two hitters, Forrest Wall and Troy Stein. Ferguson then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position, but Moronta struck out Carrizales on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
In the ninth, Martinez rolled through a 1-2-3 inning notching a strikeout of Jean before Rogers flied out to shallow right and Weeks lined out to center.
French (2-3) suffered the loss for the Nuts after yielding two runs (both earned) and four hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out four.
