Quad Cities Sweeps Beloit in DH

May 26, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - Both games looked promising at times for the Snappers, but in the end they were swept in Thursday's double-header with the River Bandits. Boomer Biegalski started strong in the first game and then collapsed in the middle innings, as the Snappers fell 5-3. Spot starter Kevin Johnson was strong in the second game, but his bullpen couldn't hang on, giving Quad Cities the 4-3 win.

Beloit got on the board in the third inning of the first game on Chris Iriart's two-run double. The River Bandits cut that lead in half in the fourth thanks to Dexture McCall's solo homer off Biegalski, who fell apart in the fifth. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Connor Goedert, an RBI double to McCall, and a two-run shot to Pat Porter, giving Quad Cities a 5-2 lead. Jesus Lopez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all Beloit could muster against the River Bandits.

Biegalski (4-1, 2.60 ERA) ended up turning in six innings, but he allowed five runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three. His mound opponent, Makay Nelson (0-0, 5.19 ERA), wasn't much better, as he went just four innings while giving up three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out one. However, Beloit couldn't do anything against River Bandits right-hander Ralph Garza, who threw three stellar innings of relief to close Game 1.

The second game got off to a great start for the Snappers, as they jumped all over Quad Cities starter Albert Abreu (1-5, 5.45 ERA) early on. Iriart hit his second RBI double of the day in the first inning, and then Trent Gilbert had an RBI single in the second. A passed ball on River Bandits catcher Anthony Hermelyn, also in the second inning, allowed Justin Higley to score from third, extending the Snappers' lead to 3-0.

Johnson (0-0, 2.70 ERA) was stellar in his spot start, scattering four hits across four scoreless innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one. An ugly relief appearance from Mike Fagan spoiled Johnson's outing, however. Fagan drilled Keach Ballard with an 0-2 pitch and then walked Bobby Wernes to start the fifth. A wild pitch allowed both to move up a base, setting the stage for disaster. Myles Straw hit a sacrifice fly for the River Bandits' first run of the game, and then an RBI single from Arturo Michelena drew Quad Cities within a run. Jared Lyons would come on to replace Fagan after just a third of an inning, but he couldn't stop the bleeding either. Goedert tied the game with an RBI single and then Hermelyn's sacrifice fly gave the River Bandits a 4-3 lead.

Beloit rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as they were able to load the bases thanks to some erratic relief pitching from Juan Santos. However, Daniel Schmitt came in and put out the fire for Quad Cities, inducing a Brett Siddall groundout to end the game.

After a shaky start, Abreu was stellar for the River Bandits, going 6 2/3 innings while allowing three runs on five hits. He walked none and struck out eight in his near-complete game.

The Snappers did have some nice hitting performances in Game 1, as Gilbert and Tom Gavitt each went 2-for-2. They struggled to just five hits overall in Game 2, however. The Snappers fell back to .500 at 23-23 following the sweep.

Beloit will begin a four-game series in Kane County tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT. Tyler Mark (0-3, 9.82 ERA) will go for the Cougars, while the Snappers have yet to announce their probable starter.
