Z's Doomed by Another Big Inning in Sweep

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Carlos Rivero hit two homers, the second of which began a five-run rally in the seventh inning to lead the Reno Aces to a 7-5 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs and a sweep of the four-game series.

The Zephyrs have lost seven straight home games and 16 of their last 22 overall, and were swept at home by a Pacific Conference team for the first time since Reno took a rain-shortened three-game set in August 2010.

Four errors by the Aces helped New Orleans build a 5-1 lead through four innings. Two runs scored in the second when shortstop Jack Reinheimer allowed a Kenny Wilson grounder to slip between his legs, and an inning later, right fielder Socarates Brito mishandled a single by Matt Juengel to allow Robert Andino to advance to third base, and he would score on a bunt by Isaac Galloway.

Adrian Nieto led off the fourth with a single, and after Andino was hit by a pitch, Austin Nola drilled a single to left to score Nieto. Zach Borenstein attempted to throw out Andino at third base, but his throw skipped away and Andino trotted home with the fifth run.

Rivero's home run leading off the fifth brought Reno within 5-2, but Z's starter Dylan Axelrod was still in control through six innings.

But just like on Wednesday, when the Aces used a six-run sixth to surge past the Zephyrs, they again batted around and scored five times to rally.

Rivero followed a leadoff single by Borenstein with his second home run, and back-to-back singles by Ed Lucas and Todd Glaesmann ended Axelrod's outing. Cody Ege hit Mike Freeman with a pitch to load the bases, then hit Kyle Jensen to force in the tying run.

A soft grounder by Brito brought in the go-ahead run, and Reno added an insurance tally on Reinheimer's infield single.

The rough inning turned a potential win for Axelrod into a loss, as he was charged with six runs on 10 hits in a season-high 6 1/3 innings.

Zack Godley, brought up from Double-A Mobile earlier in the day to replace the promoted Archie Bradley, scattered eight hits across six innings to win his Triple-A debut.

Matt Capps worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save.

The Zephyrs open a four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers on Friday at 7 p.m.
