Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps (24-23) scored five runs in the final three innings, capped by a two-homer, three-run ninth, to hand the Lansing Lugnuts (24-21) a 5-3 loss on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The late turnaround spoiled a career-high seven innings from 20-year-old Lugnuts right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, who added seven strikeouts and walked just one.
Lansing built a 3-0 lead following two runs in the first - including a leadoff home run from Gunnar Heidt - and a solo tally in the fourth against Fort Wayne starter Thomas Dorminy, but the TinCaps chipped away.
Jhonatan Pena's RBI fielder's choice in the seventh off Reid-Foley brought the 'Caps within 3-1, and Michael Gettys's home run in the eighth off Starlyn Suriel trimmed the deficit down to one run.
Lugnuts closer Dusty Isaacs (Loss, 1-1) had only allowed one unearned run in 16 relief appearances - but that was dispatched in a hurry. Austin Allen led off the ninth with a rocket of a homer to right, and the Lugnuts' lead was gone. Two batters later, Ty France singled and Pena followed with a two-run homer, giving the 'Caps their first lead of the night.
Fort Wayne reliever Phil Maton (Win, 1-1) recorded the final six outs of the game, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
In the loss, the Lugnuts received multi-hit performances from both designated hitter Max Pentecost (2-for-4) and shortstop J.C. Cardenas (2-for-3).
Next up, Lansing embarks on a seven-game road trip to South Bend and Dayton. The trip begins with a 7:35 p.m. Friday affair, with left-hander Tayler Saucedo (1-5, 5.26) taking on South Bend Cubs left-hander Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.83).
The next Lugnuts home game is on Friday, June 3rd, a LAFCU Fireworks night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The weekend continues with Star Wars Night on Saturday, June 4th, also featuring postgame LAFCU Fireworks.
