RiverDogs Hit the Road, Don't Miss a Beat in 3-1 Win over Augusta
May 26, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The RiverDogs became the first to reach 30 wins in the South Atlantic League and started out a weeklong road trip with a 3-1 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
In a 1-1 ball game heading into the eighth, Hoy Jun Park stung a single into right field to plate the go-ahead run as the RiverDogs improved to a league leading 30-16 record on the season.
Yefrey Ramirez (2-1) was stellar in his seven innings of work, allowing just a run on four hits while striking out eight, one shy of matching his career-high.
The RiverDogs got on the board first in the second inning with three straight singles to make it 1-0. Angel Aguilar stroked a base hit up the middle, followed by a hit to right by Afenir before Kendall Coleman gave Charleston the early lead.
Augusta (21-26) answered back to tie up the game at one apiece in the fourth when GreenJackets catcher Matt Winn singled with two outs before being doubled home by third baseman Kelvin Beltre, making it 1-1.
In the eighth, a pair of infield singles would set up Park's late inning clutch hit with right fielder Nathan Mikolas just beating out his single and Kyle Holder hitting a tapper off the mound to reach first and extend his hitting streak to 14 games. The three hits in a row followed a stretch of 14 RiverDogs batters sent down in order by Augusta starter Cory Taylor (3-1) who worked 7.1 solid innings allowing two runs with eight strikeouts.
The RiverDogs made it a more comfortable 3-1 lead in the ninth when Afenir singled to score Aguilar who had lead off the inning with the only walk of the ballgame issued by either side.
An All-SEC back end closed out the game for Charleston as former Georgia Bulldog David Sosebee recorded a scoreless eighth and former Mizzou hurler Andrew Schwaab picked up his ninth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Upcoming
The RiverDogs continue the four-game series with Augusta on Friday as Charleston sends RHP Daris Vargas (4-0, 2.23) against the GreenJackets RHP Michael Connolly (1-1, 3.31).
