Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (11-21) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (19-13) 15-5 at Bethpage Ballpark on Wednesday night in the second of a three game midweek series. Long Island evens up the series at a victory apiece with the rubber game and the finale of the road trip tomorrow evening.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher R.J. Hively (0-4) was tagged with the loss, lasting five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out four, and surrendering two home runs. Long Island Starting Pitcher John Brownell (3-0) earned the victory, tossing six and one third innings, giving up five runs (four earned runs) on six hits, walking three and striking out four.

Long Island got on the board first in the home half of the third inning off Hively. Blake Tekotte led off the frame with a double, and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by former Bluefish Matt Wessinger. Fehlandt Lentini was then retired, and it seemed as if Hively could get out of the inning unscathed. With two outs, Dan Lyons doubled, plating Tekotte with the game's first run, and Lew Ford followed with an opposite field home run over the wall in right, and just like that Long Island had the early 3-0 lead. The Ducks would put up four more runs in the fifth on a one out grand slam also to right field off the bat of cleanup hitter Tyler Colvin, his first roundtripper of the season as Long Island extended their advantage to 7-0. The Flock would make it 11-0 in their favor in the bottom half of the sixth inning off reliever Blake Beaven on an RBI double by Wessinger, a two run triple from Lentini, and a run scoring double by Lyons. Lyons finished the evening five for five with three doubles two runs batted in and three runs scored.

Bridgeport sent ten men to the plate in the top of the seventh inning and scored five runs on five hits to cut the deficit to 11-5. Jonathan Galvez, playing in his first game as a member of the 'Fish in 2016 after signing with the team yesterday led off the inning with a single, the first of two hits on the night for the outfielder returning to the Park City after his last at bat with Bridgeport came on July 5, 2015 against York. Rossmel Perez drove home Galvez with an RBI double, and Luis Nunez plated Anthony Giansanti with a groundout. Perez would later cross the plate on an RBI single by Luis Hernendez, and Dan Johnson added to his team lead in runs batted in with a two run base knock, scoring Hernandez and Jose Cuevas, who doubled earlier during the rally to extend his on base streak to six consecutive games. Johnson is now tied for the Atlantic League lead in runs batted in with 21 along with three other players. The Ducks would make sure there was no miraculous comeback in the making for Bridgeport as they added four runs on five hits in their final turn at bat offensively in the eighth to extend the lead to 15-5 as Long Island was victorious for the 18th time in their last 25 games following a 1-6 start to the 2016 season. Cuevas and Galvez led the way for the 'Fish with a pair of hits each.
