West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps flashed some rare power at the perfect time as they beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods 5-2 Tuesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The 'Caps took an early lead when Derek Hill scored on a first-inning single by Will Maddox for the games' first run. The Hot Rods added single tallies in the second and third frames, highlighted by third baseman Kevin Padlo's solo home run; his seventh of the season. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, West Michigan mounted a two-out rally when Will Allen tied the game with an RBI-double, and Shane Zeile lined a two-run home run off the foul pole down the left field line. Zeile's blast was his second of the year, and the fifth Whitecaps homer this season. Three of them have come during the last five games. Jose Azocar added an insurance run with an RBI-single in the eighth to plate Maddox and complete the scoring in the ballgame. Bowling Green nearly cashed in a run in the eighth on a Brett Sullivan single, but Derek Hill threw out Padlo at home plate trying to score.
Whitecaps starting pitcher Jordan Smith (4-2) was effectively wild in picking up his fourth victory of the season, issuing five walks but allowed just two runs on two hits in the contest. Hot Rods ace Henry Centeno (5-1) began the game with the best ERA in the Midwest League, but wasn't his usual dominant self, allowing four runs on eight hits in taking his first loss of 2016. Jake Shull tossed the final two innings to record his sixth save. The 'Caps record improves to 23-19, while Bowling Green falls to 24-21. Hill, Maddox, Zeile and Azocar all recorded two hits for the Whitecaps in the victory.
