Boomers Battle Back, Lose In Extras

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the Joliet Slammers at 5-5 but could not keep up and lost 10-7 in 12 innings.

The Boomers played catchup for much of the game, allowing a run in the second before answering with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Josh Heddinger allowed three runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth. The Boomers answered the bell in the seventh with an RBI single from Mark Nelson and a two RBI single from Paul Kronenfeld. Kronenfeld finished the game with two hits including a double in the fourth inning.

Despite threatening in the bottom of the ninth, Schaumburg failed to score in the inning and the teams went to extras. The International Tiebreaker came into play in the 11th and both teams scored two runs in the frame. Jordan Dean singled in a run in the 11th and Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 7. Joliet scored three in the top of the 12th and Kevin McNorton retired the Boomers in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory for the Slammers.

The Boomers slip to 1-9 with their eighth straight loss. Justin Byrd, Ino Patron and Kronenfeld led the Boomers with two hits each. This was game one of a home-and-home, day-night doubleheader.
