Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - The Iowa Cubs (12-13) captured the series victory as they bested the Nashville Sounds (12-15) 4-1 Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.

With the game knotted 1-1 after seven, Iowa rallied for a three-run eighth to take the lead for good. After Kristopher Negrón knocked a leadoff triple, Munenori Kawasaki followed with a go-ahead RBI single. Kawasaki swiped second and came around to score when Albert Almora Jr. punched the I-Cubs' second triple of the inning. Almora Jr. later scored on a wild pitch from J.B. Wendelken to give Iowa the 4-1 edge.

For the first time in this series, Iowa took the first lead of the game. Daniel Vogelbach grounded into a double play with runners on the corners in the fourth to bring in a run. Nashville rallied to put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but Scott Barnes worked out of the inning to hold off the Sounds for another frame. The home team managed a successful comeback in the sixth as Joey Wendle scored from third on a fielding error by Arismendy Alcantara, but that would be all for the Nashville offense.

The Iowa defense was key as it rolled up a season-high four doubles plays, while Juan Perez recorded an outfield assist by throwing out Max Muncy at second. Stephen Peraklsis, recalled from Double-A Tennessee today, gave the I-Cubs 4.0 strong innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out three in his second career start. Armando Rivero (2-0) took the win, contributing 1.2-hitless innings, as Felix Pena snagged a 2.0-inning save. Pena increased his scoreless inning streak to five appearances and 10.0 innings.

Almora Jr. led the Iowa offense with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Contreras tallied his sixth multi-hit game of the season with two base knocks, while Negrón reached base three times with a triple and two walks.

Iowa travels to Omaha tomorrow for a four-game series with the Storm Chasers. Friday's contest is set for 7:05 p.m. To catch the action, tune in to AM 940 or stream the broadcast for free on www.iowacubs.com.
