Morimando Keeps Ducks Rolling
May 5, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron's Shawn Morimando improved to 5-0 on the season, and Eric Stamets hit a two-run homer, as the RubberDucks completed a three-game sweep and a perfect homestand with a 6-1 win over the Trenton Thunder Thursday night at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Working against EL Player of the Month Dietrich Enns, Trenton's left-handed ace, the RubberDucks managed to strike for two runs in the first inning on Jordan Smith's two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded. After Enns gave up a one-out single and back-to-back walks with two outs, Smith laced a base hit to left to make it 2-0. Those were the first runs given up by Enns (3-1) all season.
Winging It
Morimando was brilliant in his sixth outing of the season. He allowed just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings. Showcasing a devastating curve, Morimando (5-0) fanned three and induced eight ground-ball outs. It was his second outing against the Thunder, both of which have resulted in victories. He is just the second EL pitcher to reach the five-win mark this season. Grant Sides (1.2 IP) and Ben Heller (1 IP) provided scoreless relief.
Duck Tales
Stamets cracked a two-run shot in the sixth inning to give Akron a 4-1 lead. It was the last pitch that Enns threw, and came after Alex Monsalve had led off the inning with a line drive single to left. It was Stamets' third homer of the year and the 31st overall for the RubberDucks, who lead the league in home runs. Later in the inning, Nellie Rodriguez blasted a RBI double to left to extend the lead to 5-1. Yandy Diaz was 3-4, with three singles, and raised his average to .288. Clint Frazier was 2-4, including his league-best 10th double.
