Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - Blue Rocks starter Ashton Goudeau fanned 11 Pelicans in eight shutout frames to lead Wilmington to a 4-0 win over Myrtle Beach in their series opener Thursday at Frawley Stadium.
Goudeau (2-2) was nearly untouchable throughout, setting a career-high in strikeouts without walking a batter. Wilmington (7-19) snapped a 12-game losing streak after issuing a combined 24 hitters in the two games leading into this series.
Myrtle Beach (14-12) really only had one good scoring chance all night. Yasiel Balaguert and Jason Vosler each singled with one out in the fourth. However, Goudeau induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Wilmington jumped out to the early advantage. Alfredo Escalera singled with one out in the first before Austin Bailey did the same and Wander Franco walked to load the bases. Pelicans starter Trevor Clifton (0-3) then yielded a two-run single to Brandon Downes to put the Blue Rocks on top 2-0.
That would be the only mistake Clifton would make all night. For the third time in his five starts, Myrtle Beach was shutout, but the right-hander matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. He walked three and gave up three hits.
With the score still 2-0 in the seventh, Myrtle Beach reliever Jordan Minch surrendered a two-run, two-out triple to Franco that allowed Wilmington to increase their lead to 4-0.
The second game of the four-game series pits Myrtle Beach RHP Erick Leal (2-2, 5.94 ERA) against Wilmington RHP Zach Lovvorn (0-4, 3.60 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
