Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps erased an early deficit and defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3 Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark in game one of a three-game series. Rashad Brown had three hits and had a hand in three of West Michigan's runs to get the Whitecaps over .500.

Wisconsin (13-15) jumped to a fast start with two runs in the first inning. Blake Allemand, Max McDowell, and Isan Diaz had three straight singles with one out. Jake Gatewood followed with a two-run double to left to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.

West Michigan (13-12) answered in the bottom of the first with three runs. Brown singled and Brett Pirtle walked with one out. Then, Will Allen doubled to right to knock in Brown. Rattlers starter Jordan Yamamoto got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Jose Azocar was next and his hard, one-hopper to short barely missed Allen, who had to duck out of the way. The ball deflected off Diaz and into center for a two-run single and a 3-2 lead for the Whitecaps.

The Rattlers nearly responded in the top of the second. David Denson singled, Troy Stokes, Jr. was hit by a pitch, and Allemand singled to load the bases with one out. McDowell hit a hot line drive back at Whitecaps starter Jordan Smith, but Smith caught the ball at his belt buckle for the second out. He would get the final out on a routine grounder to second and maintain the one-run lead.

Brown figured into the fourth run of the game for the Whitecaps. He singled to start the inning and stole second base. Will Maddox singled with two outs to drive in Brown.

The Rattlers rallied for a run in the top of the fifth. Diaz doubled with one out and Gatewood singled to put runners on the corners. Mitch Ghelfi, in his first day off the disabled list, lined a single to right to score Diaz and the deficit was down to one run.

But, the Whitecaps added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Derek Hill doubled to start the inning. Brown was next and he followed with a double to knock in Hill for the insurance run.

Wisconsin had nine hits off Smith, but could only manage three runs off him. Trent Szkutnik relieved for Smith and tossed three scoreless innings before turning the game over to Gerson Moreno for the top of the ninth.

Gatewood led the Wisconsin offense with his third straight multi-hit game and his seventh multi-hit game of the season. Diaz and Allemand also had two hits in the game for the Rattlers.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night. Jon Perrin (1-0, 2.70) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. West Michigan has named Matt Hall (2-0, 0.83) as their starter. Game time is 6:00pm CDT.

The radio broadcast is on 1280 AM, WNAM starting with the pregame show at 6:40pm. The game is also available on the internet through IHeartRadio, TuneIn, and MiLB.TV.
