Rainiers Top Bees For Third Straight Night

TACOMA, Wash. - For the fourth consecutive game the Tacoma Rainiers (15-11) pitching staff yielded just one run, leading to the club's fourth straight win, this time a 3-1 decision over the Salt Lake Bees (15-12) on Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium.

Tacoma starting pitcher Joe Wieland (2-3) earned his second win of the year after working 5.2 innings and allowing only one run on five hits. He issued one walk and struck out a season-high eight batters.

Outfielder Boog Powell accounted for all three of the Rainiers runs with a solo home run to lead off the first inning and a two-run double in the top of the third. He finished the night 2-for-3 with one run, three RBI, and one walk.

Salt Lake scored their only run of the game on a solo home run from second baseman Sherman Johnson in the top of the sixth inning.

Jordan Pries, Kraig Sitton, and Casey Coleman combined to work 3.1 shutout innings out of the Rainiers bullpen to preserve the win. The trio allowed just two hits, and Coleman notched his first save of the season.

Tacoma and Salt Lake conclude their four-game set tomorrow, Thursday, May 5. The Rainiers are scheduled to start right-hander Cody Martin (3-2, 8.49) against Bees righty Kyle McGowin (0-0, -.--). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
