West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps lost a fly ball in the night sky, resulting in a 4-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps found themselves playing from behind throughout Monday's contest. Beloit struck first in the opening inning when outfielder Skye Bolt launched a solo home run, then added another run in the fourth on a wild pitch from West Michigan starting pitcher Eudis Idrogo. The 'Caps scored their first run in the sixth when Rashad Brown plated Cam Gibson with a sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Brett Pirtle tied the game at two with a two-out, run-scoring single.
In the ninth, the first two Snappers hitters reached as Chris Iriart doubled and Brett Siddall drew a walk against Whitecaps reliever Josh Laxer (0-1). After the next two hitters were retired, shortstop Trace Loehr lifted a high fly ball to right field which was lost in the evening sky by outfielder Jose Azocar. The ball fell behind Azocar, allowing both Beloit baserunners to score for a 4-2 lead. The play - scored as a two-run triple - became the difference in the ballgame.
Snappers reliever Xavier Altamirano (2-2) allowed two runs in three innings to earn his second victory of the season. Laxer took a tough-luck loss, his first of the year. Kevin Johnson pitched a perfect ninth for Beloit to earn his first save. The Whitecaps fall to 11-12, while the Snappers improve their record to 14-11. Gibson led the 'Caps offense, going 2-for-3, scoring both of West Michigan's runs.
