RubberDucks Sneak past Trenton 2-1
May 2, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Bradley Zimmer homered and Alex Monsalve delivered a clutch sacrifice fly during a two-run rally in the seventh inning Monday night, as the RubberDucks came from behind to beat the Trenton Thunder, 2-1, at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Down 1-0 in a tightly-contested pitcher's duel, the RubberDucks came to life in the seventh against Trenton reliever Alex Smith (0-2). Zimmer led off with a solo homer to right field to tie the game. It was his fourth of the year. Bryson Myles followed with a single. He stole second base and moved to third on a long fly ball to right by catcher Eric Haase. Monsalve then lifted a fly ball to center, deep enough to score Myles and give the Ducks a 2-1 lead. It was Monsalve's third RBI of the season.
Winging It
Adam Plutko started for the RubberDucks and twirled a shutout through six innings. In the seventh, however, he allowed a pair of doubles, including an RBI double by Kyle Higashioka, to give Trenton a 1-0 lead. Justin Brantley (1-0) came out of the bullpen and tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first Double-A win. J.P. Feyereisen worked the ninth and gave up a hit and two walks, but managed to end the game on back-to-back strikeouts to earn his first Double-A save.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks were held to just three hits on the night. Zimmer homered for the second straight day and now has 16 RBI. Myles's steal in the seventh was his fourth of the year. Todd Hankins was held hitless and snapped his six-game hit streak.
