Hot Rods Rout Cougars in Series Finale
May 1, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - After being shutout the previous night by the Kane County Cougars, the Bowling Green Hot Rods returned the favor by winning the series finale with their Midwest League West division foes and the last game of a six-game homestand by a score of 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Bowling Green, who was averaging over five runs per game at home this season, scored double-digit runs for the third time this season, starting in the second inning with a RBI groundout off the bat of Angel Perez. Later in the frame, designated hitter Danny De La Calle scored on a wild pitch by Cougars starter Carlos Hernandez (L, 2-1) to make the score 2-0.
Fueled by four perfect innings on the mound tossed by starter Yonny Chirinos, the score stayed that way into the fifth inning, where the Hot Rods sent 13 batters to the plate and scored a season-high seven runs in the frame. Led by three Cougars errors, Bowling Green also got a RBI double by shortstop Jacob Cronenworth, a two-run single from catcher Brett Sullivan and a RBI single by De La Calle.
Bowling Green tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Cronenworth and their final run in the eighth inning on a solo homer off the bat of outfielder Manny Sanchez.
The 11 runs were plenty for the Hot Rods pitching staff, who gave up their only two runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Cougars outfielder Luis Veras. In relief, lefty Genesis Cabrera (W, 2-1) notched the victory by tossing two scoreless innings. Lefty Jose Alvarado finished off the last three innings, giving up those two runs in the seventh on three hits while striking out five.
Overall, Bowling Green took two of three games in both series of the homestand and were victorious in four of the six games at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Hot Rods are now 8-4 in Southcentral Kentucky this season and have won six of their last nine games dating back to their last roadtrip.
The Hot Rods will head back on the road to start up a three-game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Monday. The Hot Rods will send RHP Jose Mujica to the mound while the Chiefs will counter RHP Deran Gonzalez
First pitch is scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
