Sounds Shut out Express in Series Finale

May 1, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The overarching theme throughout this four-game series between the Round Rock Express (12-10) and Nashville Sounds (11-12) has been dominant starting pitching from the visitors. That theme continued in Sunday's series finale as RHP Zach Neal (3-1, 3.14) picked up the win after holding Round Rock scoreless on just five hits in 7.1 innings of work. The Sounds won 3-0.

Express RHP Anthony Ranaudo (1-1, 2.03) was efficient in his first start with the team after being activated from the disabled list. The righty issued just one earned run on two hits in four innings on the hill. Ranaudo recorded five strikeouts to just one walk in the losing effort.

For the fourth straight game, the visitors struck first. This time, Nashville pushed a pair of runners across the plate in the fourth inning. DH Renato Nunez collected a one-out single prior to CF Jake Smolinski reaching on a throwing error by 2B Drew Robinson on the attempted force out at second. A Matt Olson walk then created a bases loaded jam for Ranaudo with still only one out in the inning.

Sounds LF Andrew Lambo delivered in the next at-bat, smacking a ground ball through the gap in left for a single. After Nunez scored easily from third, Jones opted to relay the ball to 3B Patrick Kivlehan, giving Smolinski enough time to score. Meanwhile, Olson fell directly into the trap set by Jones, finding himself caught in a rundown between second and third. Kivlehan flipped the ball to SS Doug Bernier, who cut off Olson's path to second, ultimately tossing the ball to C Michael McKenry to record the out near third base. Ranaudo would force RF Matt McBride into a ground out to end the inning.

Neal faced just one more than the minimum through the first five innings. The only real scoring threat for the Express occurred in the sixth. DH Jurickson Profar recorded a leadoff single before being eliminated at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of CF Jared Hoying. A single from LF Justin Ruggiano gave the E-Train multiple baserunners in an inning for the only time today, but 1B Ike Davis grounded into a double play that thwarted the opportunity.

Nashville added some insurance in the ninth inning as Lambo and C Bruce Maxwell combined for a pair of doubles to extend their lead to 3-0. The run represented just the second earned run allowed by a Round Rock reliever since Thursday. In what has been a bright spot for the E-Train as of late, the bullpen combined to give up just the one run on four hits and one walk in five total innings.

The Express now hit the road for a four-game series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Express RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-2, 4.09) is set to toe the rubber against LHP Brett Suter (0-2, 7.45) of the Sky Sox. First pitch at Security Service Field is set for 7:35 p.m. central time.
