Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Five runs over the final two innings pulled Rancho Cucamonga out of a four-run deficit and sent them to their first win of the year when trailing after eight innings, as the Quakes downed the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night by a final of 7-6.
A LoanMart Field crowd of 3,155 stuck around to the end for post-game Fireworks thanks to Slater's 50/50 and no doubt were happy they did, as Kyle Garlick hit a three-run homer in the eighth, setting the table for a two-run ninth, as the Quakes won their fifth straight overall and pulled to within one game in the South Division.
After Garlick's sixth blast of the year made it a 6-5 game in the eighth, Rancho went to work again in the bottom of the ninth. Johan Mieses singled to open the inning off of Mavs' closer Scott Williams. Yusniel Diaz took a four-pitch walk to put the winning run on base. Julian Leon followed with an RBI single to even the game at 6-6. Williams (0-1) rebounded to strike out Jordan Tarsovich for the first out, but Erick Mejia capped a ten-pitch at-bat with a single to left-center field for the game-winner, plating Diaz for the win.
The early buzz centered around Quakes' starter Yaisel Sierra, who was making his professional debut. Sierra showed good life on his fastball, striking out seven batters over four innings, but allowed three runs on six hits over his four frames in the no-decision.
Quakes' reliever Bubby Rossman (2-0) retired all six batters he faced to notch the win in relief.
The Quakes (16-7) will look for a three-game sweep over High Desert (17-6) on Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. Rancho will send Tommy Bergjans (2-1) to the hill, opposite Luis Ortiz (1-1) in the finale.
Sunday will feature another U.S. Bank Youth Little League Clinic, as kids will receive free baseball instruction from Quakes' players and coaches beginning at 10am. Sunday will also be a Kids-Eat-Free Sunrun Sunday, as kids 12 and under will receive a coupon for a free Tremor Meal (hot dog, chips, soda), thanks to Sunrun. Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon...Go Quakes!
