Kernels Walk off on Whitecaps
April 29, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - For the first time this season, the West Michigan Whitecaps couldn't hold a ninth inning lead as they fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-6 Thursday night at Perfect Game Field.
The Whitecaps scored in each of the first three innings, including a four-run rally in the second. 'Caps catcher Arvicent Perez opened the scoring with an RBI-single and scored on a base hit from outfielder Derek Hill. Shortstop David Gonzalez added a run when he stole home, and an RBI-single by Brett Pirtle capped the rally to give West Michigan a 5-0 lead. The Kernels wasted little time closing the gap to 6-5. After the Whitecaps added a run in the third, Cedar Rapids struck for four against starting pitcher Fernando Perez. Shortstop Jermaine Palacios delivered an RBI-single and outfielder LaMonte Wade scored following a wild pitch to highlight the four-run rally in the fourth inning.
The score remained the same until the ninth, when the Kernels loaded the bases against 'Caps reliever Gerson Moreno with two outs. It looked as if Fernandez had taken a strike that would've ended the contest, but Moreno's 1-2 pitch was ruled outside to even the count. Two pitches later, Fernandez singled to tie the game at six. The Whitecaps went back to their bullpen, but reliever Jon Maciel uncorked a game-ending wild pitch as the 'Caps gave up a ninth inning lead for the first time in 2016, and the Kernels escaped with a 7-6 victory.
Kernels pitcher Nick Anderson (1-0) earned his first win of the season for a scoreless inning of work, while Moreno (0-1) was dealt his first loss. Gonzalez led the Whitecaps at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
