Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons power play created an early lead on but the Hershey Bears battled back to beat the Falcons by a score of 4-3 in a shootout.

The Bears nearly struck first just moments into the game as Christian Djoos threw a puck on net that hit Niklas Treutle and bounced towards the net. After review, it was determined that the puck didn't cross the line and Treutle made the save. It proved important as the Falcons got a power play moments later and took advantage. Corey Potter fed Laurent Dauphin in the slot, who let a shot go that beat Justin Peters low for his sixth of the season. The power play goal scored at 8:33 also saw Justin Hache register an assist. The power play would again strike moments later, at the 10:01 mark, as Philip Samuelsson sprung Greg Carey into the offensive zone for a 2-0 Falcons lead. Carey's backhanded shot beat Peters blocker side for his twentieth goal of the season.

Hershey got on the board midway through the middle frame on a nifty passing play. Scott Gomez gained the offensive zone and fed Madison Bowey down low, who found Riley Barber in front of the net for the tap-in goal. The tally, Barber's sixteenth of the season, was scored at 10:40. The Bears would proceed to tie the game moments later as Travis Boyd tipped a point-shot off the stick of Erik Burgdoerfer for his fifteenth of the season. Chris Bourque would also pick up an assist on the goal scored at 12:10. Hershey took a 3-2 lead at 18:28 as Bourque blasted home his twenty-second of the season from the point. The goal, scored on the power play, was assisted by Boyd and Gomez.

After a few big saves by Treutle, including a glove save off of a Sean Collins blast, the Falcons retook the momentum in the third period. Samuelsson tied the game with a snap-shot past Peters on the blocker- side at 14:48 of the third period. Dustin Jeffrey and Craig Cunningham each assisted on Samuelsson's fourth goal of the season. Overtime didn't decide anything, so the sides headed to the shootout. Connor Carrick scored on the opening shot with Djoos scoring in round two for the Bears. Peters stopped both Carey and Jeffrey to preserve the 4-3 victory for the Bears. Treutle made 24 saves with his record going to 9-11-5. Peters stopped 26, including the two shootout attempts, to improve his record to 12-6-6.

The Falcons will host the Providence Bruins tomorrow at 5:00 P.M. at the MassMutual Center. The game will be followed by a free open-skate with the Falcons players. The team will also host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Tuesday night at 7:00 P.M.
