Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today the recall of forward John McFarland from the Portland Pirates. The Panthers have also reassigned forward Corban Knight to Portland. In an unrelated move, the Pirates have reassigned forward Steven Hodges to Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL.

McFarland, a 6-foot-1, 205 pound left wing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, has played 43 games for Portland this season, scoring 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points.

This is the first NHL recall for the fourth year pro. McFarland was selected by Florida in the Second Round (33rd Overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to turning pro, McFarland played four seasons of major junior hockey with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, Saginaw Spirit, and Ottawa 67's.

He will be eligible to make his NHL debut for the Panthers tonight when Florida hosts the St. Louis Blues at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Knight, a 6-foot-2, 200 pound center from High River, Alberta, rejoins Portland for the second time this season. He played in three games with the Pirates earlier this season, scoring one goal and adding an assist for two points.

Since being recalled from Portland on December 14, Knight played in 20 games with the Panthers and scored twice, while adding five assists for seven points. Selected by Florida in the Fifth Round (135th Overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the third year-pro played four seasons of NCAA Division I Men's Hockey at the University of North Dakota before turning pro.

Knight will be available to play for the Pirates tonight at the PPL Center against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Hodges, a 6-foot, 187 pound center from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, was recently cleared to play after off-season surgery. The 21 year-old second year pro has played a total of 51 games over his professional career, 23 with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL and 28 with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones.

With San Antonio last season, Hodges scored a goal and an assist for two points. With Cincinnati, Hodges scored eight goals and added seven assists for 15 points.

Selected by Florida in the Third Round (84th Overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Hodges played five seasons of major junior hockey in the WHL with the Chilliwack Bruins and Victoria Royals.

Hodges will be eligible to suit up for the Monarchs for their next game, which is this Sunday at Verizon Wireless Arena against the Wheeling Nailers.

The Pirates begin a seven-game road stand starting against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms tonight.
