Americans Fall to Royals in Shootout

Kennewick, WA- The Tri-City Americans (23-25-2-1, 49 pts) and Victoria Royals (33-15-2-3, 71 pts) combined for eight goals in the first two periods, but were silent until the shootout, with the Royals earning a 5-4 win in front of 3,682 fans at Toyota Center on Friday Night.

Less than a minute into the game, Victoria struck first. Tyler Soy skated in on a shorthanded breakaway, nestling a backhand shot into the net for a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes into the period, Victoria took a 2-0 lead, as Vladimir Bobylev slipped the puck underneath Evan Sarthou for a goal. Tri-City got on the scoresheet a few minutes later, as Tyler Sandhu cleaned up a rebound shorthanded to slice the Victoria lead to 2-1. The Royals added another shorthanded goal late in the first from Regan Nagy for a 3-1 lead after one period.

Early in the second, the Americans decreased the lead to 3-2 as Brendan O'Reilly fired a shot from the midpoint through traffic into twine. Less than 30 seconds later, the game was tied, as Nolan Yaremko put home a rebound chance. The Americans took the lead on the power play shortly after tying the game, as Parker Wotherspoon let go a shot from the midpoint, finding its way through traffic and lighting the lamp for a 4-3 advantage. But the lead was short-lived, as Victoria tied the game on Bobylev's second of the game midway through the period, evening the score at four going into the third period.

Tri-City outshot Victoria 10-9 in the third, but no goals were scored in third. Overtime couldn't produce a goal, forcing the game to a shootout. Soy put the Royals ahead in the first round of the shootout, but Tyler Sandhu tied the shootout in the second round. Dante Hannoun scored in the fourth round for Victoria, helping the Royals earn the win.

The Americans snapped a five-game home win streak and a three-game overall win streak. Victoria and Tri-City played four games this season, with three games exceeding regulation as the teams split the season series.

Victoria was 1-of-6 on the power play and recorded 15 penalty minutes. Tri-City converted 1-of-5 with the man advantage and spent 17 minutes in the penalty box.

Evan Sarthou and Nicholas Sanders combined for 23 saves, with Sanders earning the loss. Griffen Outhouse and Coleman Vollrath combined for 24 saves, with Outhouse earning the win.

The Americans are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 6, against the Spokane Chiefs (26-20-3-2, 57 pts). Game time is at 7:05 p.m. at Toyota Center.
