Game Notes: Broncos off the Brandon

The Records: The Broncos are 12-23-4-1. They are 7-12-1-0 at home and 5-11-3-1 on the road. The Broncos sit 6th in the East Division and 11th in the East Conference.

The Broncos are 9 points behind Edmonton in the Eastern Wildcard standings for the 2nd playoff spot.

The Broncos are coming off a 5-2 loss to Lethbridge Wednesday night in Lethbridge.

Brandon had an 8-1 win over Prince Albert on home ice last night to improve to 25-12-2-2. They are in first place in the WHL East division and 3rd in the conference.

RECENT TRADES:

Debrusk Dealt: The Broncos traded Jake Debrusk to Red Deer for 18 year old forward Lane Pederson, a 2017 1st round bantam pick and a 2016 3rd round pick.

Schumacher Sent to Seattle: The Swift Current Broncos sent the rights to Andreas Schumacher to Seattle to free up a roster spot for an import.

New Face, Olhaver: After freeing up an import roster spot the Broncos added 18 year old Swedish forward Gustav Olhaver. The 6'7, 220 pound left wing was released by Seattle after they acquired the right to Andreas Schumacher. Olhaver is expected to make his Bronco debut tonight.

Leth leaving: Cavin Leth was traded to Seattle. The 19 year old forward was exchanged for 17 year old defenseman Sahvan Khaira. Khaira is 6'3.5 and 220 pounds.Khaira has 4 assists and 31 penalty minutes in 34 games this season.

Bye to Bow: Yesterday the Broncos dealt 20 year old goalie Landon Bow to Seattle in exchange for 20 year old forward Jamal Watson, 18 year old goalie Taz Burman and a conditional 2nd round WHL bantam draft pick.

VS The Wheat Kings: This is the 7th meeting of the teams this year. The Broncos are 2-4-0-0 in the series whie Brandon is 4-1-0-1. The last meeting was a 4-1 Brandon win in Swift Current December 18th. Jayce Hawryluk, Reid Duke, Macoy Erkamps and Ivan Provorov all lead the season series in scoring with 6 points. Jon Martin and Glenn Gawdin have 5 points this year vs Brandon for Swift Current.

Sick Bay: Kaden Elder, upper body 1-2 weeks. Glenn Gawdin, lower body 3-5 weeks. Jordan Harris, upper body indefinite. Cole Johnson, upper body indefinite. Calvin Spencer, lower body 3-5 weeks. Jamal Watson is day to day with a lower body injury.

Special Teams: The Bronco power play is scoring 15.3% of the time which is 21st in the WHL. The penalty kill is 12th best in the league at 79.4%.

Brandon scores 18.3% of the time on the power play which is the 16th best percentage in the league. Brandon's penalty kill is at 75.8% which is 20th in the 22 team league.

Lane Pederson has goals in 3 of his last 4 games and points in 4 straight games for the Broncos.

Macoy Erkamps and Ivan Provorov are 4th and 8th in WHL defenceman scoring.

Red Duke had a six point night vs Prince Albert in an 8-1 Brandon win last night. Duke had a goal and 5 assists. Ivan Provorov and Tim McGauley had 2 goals and 2 assists in that game.

Game Winners: Jon Martin leads the team and WHL in game-winning goals with 6. Kade Jensen has 2. Colby Sissons and Artyom Minulin each age one game winner.

Heward Back from World U17's: Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward has rejoined the team after a stint as assistant coach of Team Canada Red at The 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Heward and Team Canada Red lost to Sweden in the Bronze Medal game Saturday.

Bronco Prospect wins gold at Mac's: 1999 born forward and Bronco prospect Tyler Oakenfold was part of the gold winning team at the Mac's Midget Tournament in Calgary. Oakenfold plays for the Calgary Midget AAA Flames.

Broncos Prospects Shine in U16 Challenge Cup: 3 members of the Broncos Bantam Draft class of 2015 took part in the U16 Challenge Cup in Calgary. Josh Prokop and Jacob Bernard-Docker were a part of Gold Medal winning Team Alberta. 2000 born prospect Riley Stotts led silver medal winners Team Manitoba in scoring. Broncos Assistant General Manager Jamie Porter and Goaltending Coach Derek Purfield also lent their talents to Team Alberta.

Central Scouting with an Eye on Max: Max Lajoie has again received an A level rating by NHL Central Scouting on the players to watch list. Lajoie is a late birthday 1997 born player who is draft eligible in 2016. Lajoie was one of six WHL prospects to get an A level rating last week. An A rating indicates a 1st round candidate in the NHL entry draft. Swift Current has had first round selections in the last two NHL entry drafts (Julius Honka in 2015, Jake Debrusk in 2015)

Drafted Broncos: Glenn Gawdin was selected in the 4th round by the St. Louis Blues in 2015. Gustav Olhaver as a 7th round selection of the Colorado Avalanche.

Who's the Best? The WHL recently named its Top 125 players of all time. Fans can vote for their favorites. After fan voting, the greatest all time players in the WHL will be named this season. Former Broncos on the list are: Cody Eakin, Dan Lambert, Adam Lowry, Joe Sakic, Brian Sakic, Bryan Trottier and Tiger Williams.

The Roster: The Broncos have 25 players on their roster.

Imports are Gustav Olhaver from Sweden and Artyom Minulin from Russia.

20 year olds are Jon Martin, Scott Feser and Jamal Watson.

There are 6 98's; Kaden Elder, Tyler Steenbergen, Cole Johnson and Colby Sissons, Sahvan Khaira and Artyom Minulin.
