Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons faltered to the Providence Bruins in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday night at the MassMutual Center.

The Falcons took the momentum early in an unlikely fashion, killing off an abbreviated five-on-three power play by Providence after taking two infractions in the game's first four minutes. They parlayed that momentum into the game's opening goal as Dustin Jeffrey slipped a pass in front of the net to Greg Carey. Carey fired the puck past Malcolm Subban on the goalie's stick-side. The goal, scored at 11:50, also saw Christian Thomas register an assist. Springfield couldn't kill their third penalty, however, as Providence tied the game at 14:43 thanks to a point-shot from Matt Irwin that beat Niklas Treutle through traffic. The goal was assisted by Austin Czarnik and Alexander Khokhlachev. Subban missed the first 4:01 of the game due to an equipment issue but Zane McIntyre began the game in net.

The Bruins took their first lead of the night early in the second period as Colton Hargrove fired a shot past Treutle on his stick-side. Zack Phillips took a rebound from a Tommy Cross shot and found Hargrove, who made it a 2-1 game at 2:20 of the second period. The Falcons would respond as Eric Selleck tied the game moments later. After a clean faceoff win, Selleck picked up the loose puck and fired it past Subban at 7:03. The goal, Selleck's fifth of the season, was scored unassisted. Providence regained the lead with their second power play goal of the night at 14:57 as Hargrove fired home his second of the night with a heavy wrist shot from in-close. Czarnik and Irwin each registered their second points of the night on the Bruins' tally.

The Bruins two-goal lead was restored with the team's third power play goal of the night as Khokhlachev tapped home a feed from Hargrove at the side of the net. Czarnik added his third assist of the night on the goal scored at 12:42. Just 26 seconds later, at 13:08, Dakota Mermis would find Alex Grant at the side of the net. Grant fired a hard shot glove-side through traffic to make it a 4-3 game. Ross Mauermann would add his first point of the evening on the goal. Treutle made 21 saves in the loss as his record fell to 6-8-1 on the season. McIntyre, in his short stint, made three saves while Subban had 24 stops on the night. He improved his overall record to 7-8-3 on the year.

The Falcons return to the ice on Friday night as they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the MassMutual Center in their first game of 2016. Puck drop for the game is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN. The Chuck-a-Puck grand prize total is at $3,200.
