Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday evening by a final score of 9-4. The Musketeers' converted on 4 of 6 power play opportunities.

"We really put ourselves behind with some penalties, but our penalty kill can't give up four goals. We've got to be better on special teams," said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.

Youngstown started the game strong, carrying play for the first nine minutes. Sioux City goaltender Cam Gornet made a handful of good saves to keep the Phantoms off the board.

Things quickly turned however, when Connor Sundquist deflected Jacob Wilson's wrist shot past Phantoms netminder Colin DeAugustine just over 10 minutes into the contest. Sioux City would go on to score three more unanswered goals, all on the power play.

Youngstown would change goalies at the beginning of the second period, as Conor O'Brien replaced DeAugustine. James Winkler would get the Phantoms on the board early in the second period, scoring his seventh goal of the season with a wrist shot that beat Gornet glove side. Youngstown would cut the Musketeers advantage in half just a few minutes later on a 5 on 3 power play advantage, when Yushiro Hirano blasted one from the point for his 13th goal of the year.

The teams would exchange power play goals late in the second period to give Sioux City a 5-3 lead going into the final twenty minutes. Lukas Craggs gave the Phantoms life, beating Gornet with just 43 seconds left in the period.

Sioux City would push its lead back to three goals just over halfway through the third period. Youngstown would again cut the Musketeers lead down to two, when Cam Morrison scored his team leading 15th tally of the year with a wrist shot that snuck past Gornet's blocker. The goal vaulted Morrison into first place amongst the USHL's leading scorers.

Youngstown's hope would be short-lived however, as Sioux City went on to score three more goals in the final eight minutes, defeating the Phantoms 9-4.

"Honestly I thought we played well for long stretches of the game, we just didn't have the timing. Couldn't get a big penalty kill or a big save. If we would have scored there early in the first period I think things could have been different," Wroblewski said.

The Phantoms will be back in Youngstown December 18th and 19th to host the Waterloo Blackhawks. Saturday the 19th is a "McDonalds Meal Deal" game, where four tickets, four hats, and four McDonald's meal vouchers are available in a special discount package for just $43.
