Huntsville's Jason Popek Named Easton Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (December 1, 2015) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Jason Popek of the Huntsville Havoc is the Easton Player of the Week for November 23-29.

Popek scored six goals, including one game-winner, added an assist and was +4 as Huntsville won two of three games last week, moving the Havoc into a tie for third place in the SPHL standings.

On Tuesday, the Hamilton, Ontario native became the first player this season to score four goals in a game as Huntsville fell to Mississippi 6-5. Popek scored twice in the first period and added one each in the second and third as he scored on all four shots he took. Popek continued his hot streak on Thanksgiving Day, adding a pair of first period goals in Huntsville's 5-1 win over Knoxville. Popek closed out his week on Saturday by recording an assist in the Havoc's 3-0 blanking of Louisiana.

Signed as a free agent on November 13 after being released from a three-game tryout with Macon, Popek currently ranks second in the SPHL in goals (8) and is tied for fifth with 13 points. Since signing with Huntsville, Popek has 11 points (7g, 4a) in 11 games. Currently in his first professional season, Popek spent four seasons at American International College, where he was twice named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team.
