Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Former Islanders goaltender Eric Brassard shut the door on his former team on Sunday afternoon as the Halifax Mooseheads defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 4-2.

The Islanders dominated play through the first forty minutes, outshooting Halifax 29-11, but the Mooseheads scored three unanswered goals in the third period to secure the win.

"They had a couple of bounces, it's just things that happen," said forward Filip Rydstrom. "Ultimately in this game I thought we were worth at least one point or two. It just sucks."

"It's a real disheartening game to lose because we deserved a much better fate," said Head Coach Jim Hulton. "We had some golden chances to put the game away and we didn't, and sometimes those come back to haunt you. It's a tough one."

The Isles started strong, outshooting the Mooseheads 6-1 early, but Halifax was able to capitalize on its second shot of the game as Danny Moynihan set up Timo Meier for his 8th goal of the year at 3:10.

Later in the period while the Isles were on the power play, they pulled back even as Filip Rydstrom drove hard to the net to tie things up at 1 at 14:50. Filip Chlapik had the assist on the goal.

"I got a long stretch pass from Chlapik and I just tried to get it on net and it went in," Rydstrom said.

Early in the second period, Luc Deschenes was sent to the box for cross-checking, but the Isles penalty kill shone.

A few seconds into the kill, David Henley blocked a shot and cleared the puck out of the zone, where Quinn O'Brien chased it down. The puck came to Rydstrom in the corner who threw it towards the net, and O'Brien tapped it in while the puck was mid-air.

"We were talking about their goalie and just hammering pucks on net," said Rydstrom. "Quinn was there and he just batted it in like tennis."

The Islanders had a golden opportunity to extend their lead midway through the period with a four minute power play, and although the Isles spent almost the entire time in the Mooseheads' zone, Brassard closed the door for Halifax.

A too many men on the ice penalty for Charlottetown in the third resulted in the Mooseheads tying the game thanks to a goal from Danny Moynihan.

Hulton said the tying goal was the pivotal point of the game.

"I think the momentum switched when they got their power play goal," said Hulton. "I liked our resolve, we never got down even when we didn't score on (the four minute power play). Even when we gave up the second goal, I liked our push-back."

Then, with less than four minutes to play in the game, Maxime Fortier put his 15th of the season past Mason McDonald to put his team up by one. Moynihan then sealed the deal with just over a minute to play with an empty net goal.

Brassard ended up stopping 36 of 38 in the Mooseheads' net.

"He was outstanding today," said Hulton. "We're always leary to give credit to our opposition, but man, he was great."

Despite the loss, Hulton was pleased with the effort and said he doesn't expect to see too many changes when the team heads to Moncton on Wednesday to face the Mooseheads.
